4.25mm to remove from the bases of the cyls.
I had added 5mm to my calculations to be safe....

YEs, but I have a minimum of 6mm cyl wall thickness.......10mm in some places!Steve Arndt wrote:With your budget it seems you would have LN cylinders.
I really like the fins on the square tractor ones! When I finish with my 103 Eurorace cylinders I may go this route.
edit;
Damn those cylinder bases on the case are thin. My 103 bored case has about twice that material remaining.

This budget was blown a long time ago.....The idea was to try to use Deutz cyls.
You CAN, it is just not cheap or economical.

Paul,
Look at this pic of the rod end caps, thin compared to SCAT crap:
Before I put the crank gear on, I dropped it into the case and spun
all of them to see if any hit, they didn't come close! .030" or more.
IF you don't do this before putting the gear on, you have to use a rubber band
trapeze to keep the hanging rods from getting stuck. It just holds them in center:
ENJOY!

Great job on your motor!
A question comes to mind, would a 66x100 be possible with those liners? Are there some limitations from the heat such liners would put out ?
I am truing to source them locally new and have the machined myself.

IF you get the 100mm version, you can run used Porsche 100mm pistons.
Just shave the tops down...
Wally has some pics of the 100 pistons with the op *dressed*.

Re: DEUTZ 912 CYLINDERS
Recommendation: I always install the crank gears and the main bearing for mock ups, especially for checking the no. 2 & 4 rods and the adjacent exh & int lobe for rod & lobe clearance.
I have a set of gears that I use for mock ups (Crank & Distributor Drive) that I chucked up in the lathe and took I think it was about .0015" out of the inside, so now they slide on and off the crank as needed. They allow you to install the crank & cam timmed, and put the cam lobe where it would hit the rod if it was going to, no guessing.

Re: DEUTZ 912 CYLINDERS
While searching for those new 100mm deutz liners i found out they are made by ks, mahle , and about 100 more indian and chinese suppliers.
Those dam cylinders look bullet proof.

Hey Don, I noticed in the case mock up pic that you have "The syndrome" with your #2 cam boss.

Amen!70dragbug shared his infinite wisdom and wrote wrote: The Deutz can take a constant 2000psi combustion pressure. At work we have a generator with a Deutz turbocharged aircooled diesel engine in it.
It runs almost everyday all day long at 2 bar (30psi) at 2200rpm in a metal box.In the 12 years I´ve been here it has never had an engine failure!
The Deutz cylinders are a pain the arse to fit,but they are the best aircooled cylinder made imho.

Re: DEUTZ 912 CYLINDERS
"the syndrome" is problem when the sump plate is over torqued after an oil change and breaks the #2 cam boss. The plate is attached to the pickup tube, which is "hung" by a thru bolt in the case halves. Although, the threads for the bolt that holds the pick up tube is in the other case half, the half shown is not looking good...CobraJet wrote:For those of us less experianced, what exactly is "The Syndrome"?

True, but you want the used, old, rusty German ones, not new.
Metal "moves" a bit with age/heat cycling.
Starting with used jugs results in a more stable bore shape.
(ageing is also why heavy equipment manufacturers (lathes/mills) will leave the new castings outside for 10+ years before final machining)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
