So in my rebuild saga, I installed my crank timing gear for the cam and the dizzy by heating up some cooking oil outside in a pot, putting the crank/cam gear in, letting the oil start to smoke (indicating it's ~450F) and then pulling the gear out and sliding it on the crank. It was easy. I did the same with the dizzy/crank gear. I have installation down pat.
However after doing all this I found a pretty bad dent in the crank/cam gear. I don't know how I missed it. I removed the dizzy gear with a torch without too much issue, but the cam gear is not coming off the crank at all. Does anyone have a tip on using a torch or do I have to go to a shop with a press? My fear is the mess up my bearing journals being careless as this crank is all purty and blueprinted.
Edited to add: I searched and came up empty. Also aircooledtech.com suggests a torque for cam gear removal but that may be applicable for Type 1-3, I dont know.

Re: Crank timing gears removal
Use the specially designed one for pulling crank gears if at all possible..
Trying to hack something up is likely to make things worse, but it is possible to use a good generic one if careful.
You need the kind of gear/bearing puller that has a thin lip that goes behind the gear.
You may be able to "borrow" one from a FLAPS.
Heating it up with a torch helps some.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Do you have a suggested tool? I don't ever mind buying more tools.Piledriver wrote:Use the specially designed one for pulling crank gears if at all possible..
