funny , I now have to go to scoobydoo dealer in the morning to get some parts for wife's wrx so while I'm there I might stir the pot , hehehehe
I have to sit down and work some numbers for stroke and what not , not my strongest attribute , I'm only a spraypainter

The main things you need to know when calculating t4 engine bits:
Stock deck (top of jugs with no spacers or gaskets is ~202.5mm.
Decking the case reduces that (a little), spacers make it wider.
Going narrow is harder than wider, jugs need shortened, pushrod tubes etc.
Going much wider than ~3mm/side makes fitting stock cooling tin progressively harder.
(up to ~3mm is fairly easy)
2L rods are 131mm long, 71mm stroke, 50mm rod journal, 26mm wide. (almost same as Dodge 2.2L//SRT4 rod bearing, rod can be modified, thank you type4unleashed, much better choices in bearings)
1.7/1.8 are 127mm long, 66 stroke, 55mm rod journal, ~26mm wide. Ti diameter but wider. 42mm compression height.
Stock 2L piston compression height is 36mm. (center of pin to crown)
...So...stroke/2+rod length+piston height=actual deck
2L: 71/2+131+36=202.5mm, usually leaves the piston almost even with the top.
1.7L: 66/2+127+42=202 usually leaves the piston .5mm down the hole.

Thanks for that info , makes it a bit easier for me to come up with a plan
I'm keen on a stroker but It seems a shame to not use some factory parts I have stashed away as there have been some good results on the forum

The 119 has a bit more lift, is slightly more aggressive ramps, the 86 setries is based on the profile of an "OEM" cam, I assume GM Duntov Corvette, the various 86x versions are differently scaled variants, but following same accel profile.
The 119 requires dual springs.
They are a good idea with the 86a, as it can (depending on heads etc) pull rpm so you will probably float hd singles after some use.

the 86a doesnt need high rpm, mine was all done at 6500rpm on the dyno

Interesting topic as always. Does CB Performance still sell the Jenvey style throttle bodies? I read
That megasquirt has gotten so much better and HEI available now it should be the way to go. Dual spark and a bit more timing.

cr is 8.2:1 with gt2860rs turbo
air/water intercooler and methanol/water injection

cooling is converted to cali upright style
