Fuel Sender Unit Problem - Help Please!

Hi!
I have a '73 Beetle.
I recently adjusted the float so that the gauge would read closer to the full mark on the gauge.
I drove it some.
I drove it again last Thursday.
The needle on the gauge went up to show 3/4 of a tank and then it dropped down showing I had 1/2 a tank.
I topped it off with 91 octane pure gas.
It took about 2.3 gallons to top it off.
Does this mean the fuel sender unit is bad or could it be the made in China vibrator?
It is a VDO sender made in India.
I am thinking of getting the German made VDO sender off the shelf and put it back on if it tests out OK.
Any help is appreciated.

I ordered a NOS made in Germany fuel gauge vibrator from a seller on eBay yesterday.
I hope that remedies a solution.
