What do you guys have for spare tire

Today I have the regular 165-80-R15 as a spare, on the original 4.5 " steel rim.

Problem is that if fully inflated (around 25-30 PSI) it does not fit into the correct place. I have to deflate it to around 15 PSI for a snug fit - and that precludes me from using a nice carpet-base cover.

I will be changing the spare tire, but I'm curious.. am I the only one? I realise that the original tire was a bias-ply, and the closest radial in size to the original are the 165-80's.

Do you guys experience the same problem?

I bent the tabs slightly, and was able to make a stock rim and 165/80-15 fit well at full pressure (26psi)

Same situation here. The spare has to be deflated to fit (I carry an electric air pump in the trunk in case of a flat).

It is time to replace the tires on my Ghia (Futura/Cooper 165 R15s, only 6,000 miles of wear but now ten years old) and will keep the spare tire size/fitment issue in mind.

I could never fit 165 without deflating, even worn. What works for me is 155/80-15 and as a bonus its what I use for the other four.

Why not try a 135 or 145 tire for the spare? That should fit and be usable as a close to full size spare.

If you want an unusable long term spare, junkyards are full of 50MPH/50 miles rated temporary tires that would fit on a stock rim at pennies on the dollar to the 135/145

You should of mentioned your bolt pattern in the beginning, in fact your question is horribly written.

You can pick up a nice aluminum wheel for a Boxster, maybe more money than a steel 911 spare, but also a good solution, and narrower. Collapsable or normal inflatable narrow tire available.

I have a 135 on a 4.5 x 15 steel Porsche wheel. I think it is from a 65' if I am reading the numbers correctly.

Those early 911/912 steel spare wheels are not cheap. A full set of them is worth 1K.

The early steelies maybe, but they were used through the 993 and later go fairly cheap.

The aluminum 5.5" wide spares may go for ~1K a set, I recall reading something about those.

The 996/boxster>later aluminum 17"x3.5" appear to sell for ~125 with tire, some have a collapsible spare on them that needs inflated.

One was for sale with the cover and the toolkit for $150--- That "kit" with spare sells for >$1000 new/optional addition, it doesn't come standard with the car.

I thought the mid 70s and newer cars had alloy spare wheels with collapsible tire + air pump?
edit; Apparently some do have steel spare wheels. I've never seen a 944 with a steel spare.

145R15, stock rim.

But really a no-brainer as the front wheels are that size too and it fits nicely under the hood.

I had earlier a 165/65-15 but it was too wide, didn't fit properly, so I sold it.

I've also a couple of very old (looks OK, though) 5.60-15 tyres, those would work nicely as spare tyre, but I'm not sure if I dare to actually drive with one.

If you keep an eye out for a good deal you may find one for <$75, probably on a steel rim, they do exist - here's one from an `87 944: http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/i6IAAOSwf ... -l1600.jpg

Or, if you do find a narrow 5x130 rim they practically give away those junkyard spacesavers and they will fit fully inflated.

Does the spare you have now fit when uninflated? Could be the easiest solution would be to just carry the li'l air compressor like Greg does.
