Hi,
I have finally tracked down a 1964 KG, into which I intend putting a Subaru EJ25 NA engine.
The Subarugears transmission kit is a bit expensive, and I am looking to mate the stock KG trans to the Subie.
Will the stock trans handle the increased power, or need modification?
Being a 4 spd trans, will that negatively affect the driving experience?
Cheers.

When you need to fix or upgrade a VW trans the Subarugears setup starts to look like a bargain in a big hurry.
I personally wouldn't trust a 6v swingaxle past ~100 hp, if you beat on it at all it will die badly.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

The Subaru alphabet soup doesn't mean much on this VW board. What size is this engine? How much hp?toeinthewater wrote: EJ25 NA engine.
Likely you will need to source a newer gearbox. The one you have is geared for 40hp, and is full of the weakest bits VW produced.

2.5L 155 or 165 HP NA DOHC 16v 1:1 CR, 170 lb/ft TQ.
If its a later NA EJ25x about the same SOHC or DOHC.
Its basically a NA STi motor, with high compression pistons.
Any of them would mean a quick ugly death for the stock transmission in a 64, and as Bruce pointed out, be geared all wrong.
Would be great fun given a transmission built and geared to use it.
Doing that properly with a T1 VW trans would cost far more than a Subarugears setup, esp if you did the suby trans work yourself, which is apparently doable, as it doesn't require $$$$pecial tools and experience to do.
