Rear wheel bearings

Post by dustrat »

Iv'e got a 73 Ghia with swing axle and I'm going to change rear wheel bearings . Does anyone know the manufactuers part number rather than VW number. :?: I want to get bearings locally from bearing supplier before I start the job.

6306

30x72x19mm "deep-groove" single row open ball bearing.

Other numbers include 394 54069 279, 6306.2RSR, 813-134,306, 306TB, 6306 C3, 6306.C3, 6306-J, P306, 91986

There's also a sealed version that's factory-lubricated which some "slammers" are using since an excessively lowered swingaxle doesn't allow any gear lube to make it up to the bearings...I don't know what the life expectancy of those is, never used 'em myself:

Got onto local bearing supplier and got them at 70% cheaper than buying from classic VW parts outlet. Thanks again Marc

Yes, it's a good way to get quality bearings, usually at better prices than the Chinese stuff most VW parts-houses are peddling nowadays. We used to go to a bearing specialty store for most of the bearings used in transmissions and Bus reduction gears, the identical Timken part could be had for less than half of the cost of one with a VW P/N label on it. You're bypassing at least two middlemen and their markups. Unfortunately they didn't stock everything, but the savings on the rest still more than justified the trip.

Had a bit of a job fitting new bearings . I had a puller that I thought would get bearings out, but no joy. In Haynes manual it shows a make do puller made of 2 3/8 inch x 6inch bolts. It took me a couple of attempts to get made correctly but when done worked perfectly . The bearings that I fitted where FAG 6306 and the ones that came out were DWB 6306 C3 . The DWB bearing had a seal on one side but the replacement bearings should be OK. Thanks again for info Marc.
