My Toaster needs a rebuild. 72 - CB/1700

Post by bajaman73 »

Hello All,
It's finally time to rebuild the 1700 in my 1972 VW Bus.
History: Owned the Bus for about 5 years. First 3 I collected parts including another CB 1700 due to the water damage on my original case. I used the engine I purchased with some rebuilt heads I had gathered and a couple of years ago I got it running and back on the road. Drove it to a bunch of shows and campouts and also as an occasional driver.
Last outing I noticed a loud ticking to find my #3 exhaust WAY out. Seems I don't have any more adjustment there. I ended up swapping heads with another set and seem to still have the same issue. I believe it's the camshaft going flat.

Questions: Currently have: the CB 1.7 complete currently installed (purchased)
Another CB 1.7 short block (original to Bus, water damage)
And a GD 2.0L Long block (purchased as a back up/core/parts)

Not knowing exactly where to go with this project, but I would like to build something a little more peppy. Would a 2056 be okay in my Bus or should I keep it at 1911? Some driving is in town, although I suspect more camping and road tripping will be done in it.

Sorry, it's a Transporter I already converted to Camper status.

Thanks for any advise you can give.

Damn. This was 2 years ago?!?

Went with the 2 Liter and changed the transmission to the 091
With the Dual 36 Dellorto's this thing pulls like a Billy Goat.

Another year. 091 Has been rebuilt by TransAxle Engineering. 2L took a dump shortly after. Gathering parts now for another 2L. Cheers!

Almost 2 years again - Engine was rebuilt by George at European Motor Works in Hawthorne. Runs like a champ. Smooth and dependable. Still rocking the same Dellortos. Bumped to 2056, Cant remember on the cam. His Grind.
Busses by the Bridge was the first run and she did great. Still cruizin'
