Herrod helper?

Post by bigmeat »

I just read the article about the herrod helper. I understand that they have not been made in several years. I wonder if there is any thing made now a days that could be subsituted?

For those like me who did not know what it was.

A rear spoiler that mounted to the fresh air vents below the rear window. Originally sold be J C Whitney in the early 70's

There was an article in Hot VW's a couple of years ago about a very similar spoiler offered by...RLR? I can't quite remeber, I'll try to find the issue.

Come to think of it, I think it was an issue of VW Trends, I still have it and will see if I can find it.

I made a home-made version of the second one for my baja:

Thanks. It took a little over 3 months to turn a 4'x4' sheet of aluminum and some 1" angle into this:

Then this:

All just to cover up this stuff and hopefully provide some cooling air to:

I would recommend buying something pre-fabbed unless you've got entirely too much spare time on your hands.........and really love to drill holes.

Nice metal work! I think I would like to have one that was featured in the magazine.

These things have been around for eons. My only concern with the Herrod Helper is that it's diverting air from the louvers that supply the engine with cooler air above the car for the carb and the cooling fan in the shroud. It's just what I think about when I look at these things. I'd like to see HVWs look at the oil temp and the cylinder head temps when using a Herrod Helper. -- Tuna

I ran one for about 4 years on my old car. I usually cruised between 70-80MPH and it definately made a huge difference in stability on the highway. Although, the front end still floated at 137MPH for some reason  FYI My motor NEVER ran hot, even after over 125K miles of abuse, although I propped my decklid at the bottom.
