My Orange Crush (74 std bug)

Post by Thorkhild »

Just documenting what I have done so far.

for pictures you can go here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 7687f566ef

1974 Standard bug; original purchased at Seattle Metro VW. I am the second owner. Still has the original plate and frame from dealership

Upgrades that I have done

drop disk brake spindles
3/4" front & rear swaybars
type 3 rear drums
rear dropped 2 outer splines
new shocks
new master cylinder
prothane springplate bushings, along with tranny mounts.
71 and earlier HD tranny mount.
merged header with stinger
Riveria wheels, with 155/60 up front and 195/60 in the rears. (I might do widened wide 5 with no hubcaps in the future. )

Megasquirt 1 v2.2 fuel only, soon to be v3.0 doing fuel and spark.

3 way front headlights: top h3 used for turn signals, middle h4 for low/high, and bottom bulb will be ????
front fender turn signals removed.

removable rear apron too.

rear "elephant feet" taillights swapped for flat lenses and LED bulbs.

Early VW Carrado seats up front, and took out the rears.

And eventually I want to get it re-sprayed orange like the original.

Engine specifics:
90.5x69
full flowed using Gene berg pressure relief oil pump cover
CB 044 heads with dual springs
solid rocker shafts with stock ratio rockers
CB performance cam (don't remember the specifics)
"36'er" fan shroud w/o heat
original Alternator
"stock" FI end castings from CB.
24 lb ejectors
Centermount IDF/DRLA manifold with 48mm throttle body.
Orange Taylor 8mm wires with NGK D8EAr spark plugs
009 dizzy (soon to be dizzyless with Magna spark crank wheel and LS2 coils)
CB wide glide oil sump
Gene berg pressure relief oil pump cover
Kenndedy stage 1 pressure plate with stock clutch

How I got the car:
The car was bought from a family friend in West Seattle. It was stored in his garage and un driven for 30 years.
It was stored with gas still in the tank, and the e-brake still engaged. One wheel was completely locked up. We tried dragging the car around the block a few times to get it to unseize. All we accomplished was ruining the tire and making a huge flat spot in it. So to get the car onto the tow dolly we unhooked it from the truck, blocked its wheels and used the truck and a tow straps to drag the beetle up onto the dolly! That was very interesting.

Yup. Lots of folks view facebook the same way they see a virus. Don't need to have any contact with the thing.
