Clutch cable too short?

Post by zenith10 »

New clutch cable in a '64 bug seems too short, I had to move the clutch lever on trans forward in order to get wing nut started. Motor is still not in. Will creating more sag in the bowden tube affect this?

Thanks

Excess preload in the Bowden tube will make the cable effectively shorter - but not enough can cause "chatter". It's not abnormal to have to pull the lever forward a bit against the return spring tension in order to get the nut on.
IIRC the original cable was 2268mm (89¼") from tip-to-tip but some part numbers have been "consolidated" over the years and the 2258/2260mm cable is now used to service your application - that'd be 5/16" shorter, close enough.

Very Good link.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
