Connecting Rods

Post by bearrn61 »

Has anyone purchased new connecting rods (standard) recently? I did, and there is a washer-looking item on top of the nuts. I don't want to crank them open until I know I'm not torqueing against something that needs to be removed. anyone know how?

washer on top of connecting rod nut, does that come off with nut, or is this another special item required to be removed before breaking open the connecting rod?

What looks like a washer is part of nut. the flat washer surface goes against conrod to avoid damage to rod when you torque the nuts down.

That "washer" is there to be staked into the slots on early conn rods - has nothing to do with "protecting" anything. VW did away with those and went to a "plain" rod nut without the flange in the `70s (if I'm using that style of rod, the nuts get Loctite). The rods you bought must be either rebuilt early-style or new repops using that design.
