Aluminium or Steel Pulley

Post by bugblanc »

I hear stories about aluminium pulleys that make me think I should be going steel billet for my project and I already have a 3.5lb EMPI item.

The car will be a mild tune 1904 mostly street, but not daily driver, and occasional strip. It has a DPR crank and lightened flywheel and will be balanced end to end when we sort out a pulley. If we used aluminium and it did wear excessively then we would need to replace it and that might affect the balance worse still would be it running off centre or even breaking up. Breaking up might cause other problems to the crank trigger.

However I am having a major problem sorting the crank trigger as most all are designed with aluminium pulleys in mind.

I use a steel hub and aluminum pulley that bolts to it. Autocraft brand but there are lots of others out there.

Stamped! Lasts as long as steel, weighs like aluminium.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

I use a Jaycee steel hub aluminum pulley. Best of both worlds, looks good too.

I plan to use an EMPI 3.5 lb pulley and CB crank trigger. I have had the both drilled to get some weight off and am down to 4lb.

BTW the pulley now weighs about 3.5lbs so it was more than that to start with.
