vw 1776 rail
My first vw engine. I can find no oil filter, is this normal? All i know is that it is a 1776cc aircooled vw engine with dual solex 44s.

You probably should have posted this in VWs for Newbies, but yes, that's normal. Unless your 1776 was set up for full-flow, there won't be a traditional oil filter. There's an oil screen under the sump plate at the bottom of the engine - the round plate about 6" in diameter, held by a bunch of acorn nuts.
Buy yourself a couple books:
How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive for the Compleat Idiot by John Muir.
Volkswagen 1200 Workshop Manual:
1961-1965 Robert Bentley Publishers
These two books will at least give you a little knowledge of what you're looking at. The Haynes manual for the Beetle isn't bad, either, if only for the photos and illustrations.

whheeeew Boy thats a real relief to know! I just bought this chenowth style rail last month for $4500,and i think i might have gotten in a little over my head. Im used to working on 345hp ford v8's, not aircooled 95hp 4 bangers. Im very happy with my investment, and im starting to get the luv bug for the little bug engines, i just need a little help...thanks
