Thanks. The air shocks are some sort of Monroe's I think. They're from Airkewld and I don't have the specific model number. I'll post a pic of the bug on the ramp when I get a chance. We're getting a south swell here in San Diego so I'll be surfing instead of working on the car this weekend.

I bought a Moroso round coolant tank and had a friend tig weld in two 1.25” pipes, the same size as my coolant hose. I will mount this up high so that it will be an easier air bleed point in my system. I’m posting from my phone so no pics yet. Hope to get it mounted this weekend. Also, what’s the best coolant for a Subaru engine? If I remember correctly, it had green coolant originally.

Okay, so I'm being lazy with this post. I hate how I have to resize the pics from my phone before I can post them here and I didn't feel like uploading them to my google drive either. I did however make a facebook post with pics and video. Here's the link on Facebook. It's a group called Subaru Powered VWs. If you don't have facebook, I'll give you the basics. I bought a Moroso round generic coolant tank, had a couple of pipes tig welded to it to replace one existing opening and made another opening. I put it inline with the line from the top of the engine. I also used a funnel with an adapter that I found on Amazon that has coolant cap adapters. The system bled very very very easily. I just need to block off the additional blow off valve on my intercooler because I have the other one on the air intake. Then I'll be ready to take the car to the tuner.

That's cool Surf! Nice to hear it running - don't see much smoke either!!

So when you're finished purging the system, how do you drain out the excess coolant from the "Mongol" funnel without spilling it all over? I might have to get one of those set-ups whenever it comes time to do mine.

Jeff,
This funnel EPAuto Spill Proof Radiator Coolant Filling Funnel Kit has a stopper that allows you to insert it from the large "Mongol" side that blocks off the small opening down in the funnel. It's really very cool and for less than $20.00, it sure saved me from the hassle of filling the system. Check it out on Amazon. What you're not able to see in the pics is that I had to use a small piece of wire to hold the funnel to the rear grill due to the angle of the piping not allowing it to be steady when full.

Simple. effective and inexpensive! Looks like a "must-have" for doing any kind of coolant work on these conversions. "Oh Santa....." :-)

How is the fan/shroud system working? Are you using a simple on-off thermostatic switch & relay for control?

Jeff,
The fan and shroud are working great. I have one more cover to place over the radiator to prevent the hot air from going into the front trunk. The fan is controlled by the factory sensor on the coolant cross pipe on top of the engine. My Link ECU connects directly to it. I also have a VDO temp sensor on an inline adapter on the heater loop. This runs to my VDO temp gauge. Using my laptop and the Link tuning software, I have compared the temp readings on both and they are within a couple of degrees of each other. So they basically match up correctly and I'm happy with that. I'm contemplating if I can get it to where I can drive it well enough to go the 8 miles to the tuner's shop. Max speed needed would by 40 if I avoided the highway. That would save me the hassle of a trailer rental but then a Uhaul rental is like 50 dollars for the day.

I got out to the garage today and finished up the metal work on my inside engine cover, otherwise known as the reversed firewall. Instead of welding up every single opening, I'm going to get some seam sealer and then paint it once I'm done. Many, many pages ago, I had posted the initial mock up of the cover, but once I got all of my intercooler piping finished, I realized I needed yet more space in the engine compartment so I had to rework the cover. Also, I attempted to connect the overflow hose from my coolant tank over to the overflow tank and apparently the tank has a .38 inch hose barb on it and my hose was .30 inner diameter. I just didn't have enough space to try to force it one so I'll be getting some larger diameter hose. I did drive the car around my neighborhood yesterday. It runs like crap but I plan to get it to the tuner's shop hopefully in December. I have too much going on in November so I don't think realistically that I'll make it there til later. I still have plenty of little things to do on the car like connect up the heater wiring and ducting and clean up the interior.

So much for getting the car going... I have found that I have a leak somewhere in the air lines to the front beam and with the holidays, I have been to busy and a bit lazy to get out to the garage and track down the leak. I hope to do it this month and then go to the tuner.

Thanks turboedbug. I got out there today and found that I did in fact have air pressure,so it must not be leaking like I thought. Then upon closer inspection, I realized that it looks like the trailing arm is rubbing hard against the air shock. It's probably causing it to bind up. I set the toe in closer than it was and realized the front camber is totally out, I have to get a 36 mm open wrench so i can adjust that. The goal is to get it good enough to safely make it over to the tuning shop which is about 10 miles away.

Hey Surf - once you loosen the BJ nut on the camber adjuster you should be able to turn the adjuster with a pair of channel-lock pliers. The taper on the camber adjuster isn't really a "press fit" into the trailing arm (although the BJ will be press-fit into the camber adjuster). You'll probably have to hold the adjuster in place (keep it from turning) when you re-tighten the BJ nut. IIRC, the camber adjuster has a notch near the nut "flats" that should be pointed forward when first installed - I think to get somewhere near 0 camber as a starting point.
