VSS (Subaru) and swing axle ?

Post by panel »

Anyone successfully have their VSS (Subaru) running off a swing axle car?

Good question. I'd like to see an answer to this as well. Any thoughts?

Yes, i did it on my nephews 64 bus works perfect almost 2 years now. Pictures on the forum from the build. Riveted five tabs on the edge of the drum and a subaru ABS speed sensor from the donor car.

Not the best pictures but you can see three of the tabs, the sensor is mounted to the backing plate.

Hmmm...I have rear disks. I'll have to get a pic on here for some ideas.

Setup should be the same. Rivet 5 tabs inside the rotor for the sensor to read.

Bit tough though since the rotor od goes through the caliper.

You misunderstood, rivet the tabs inside the hub plenty of clearance.

Wish that would work for mine. Solid aluminum in there. Good idea for most others though! There are a few things that I might try when I get some time.

Might be easier to run off the front instead.

A mate has done that on his Beetle (for digital speedo though) and it works well.

I could do front temporarily, at least until I get disks up there too. I would love to do front and rear vss at some point, traction control potential and such. I need to get creative for the rear, but that's okay.

Can you pull a proper signal off of a VDO or similar cable driven sending unit used on
an electronic speedo swap?

Not sure about for the subie swap stuff, but I could use one of those systems. just eliminates the use of my stock speedo...I would love to find a way to get a right side spindle drilled through like the left side. Then I could run the stock cable and the vdo vss. Best of both worlds.
