EJ20 notchback

Post by 55superbeetle »

Thought I would share my latest project. Finally got to do a swap at work instead of my normal weekend home shop gig. This poor customer got screwed around by another shop and had a couple failed attempts at a big type 1 engine when he showed up. He gave me the green light to do a JDM EJ20 swap, he was okay with cutting a hole in the apron but really wanted it to fit under the stock engine lid. I had to make a new intake manifold and relocate the alternator but it all worked out well. Opted to not worry about intercooling it and just run meth injection. It was also more cost effective on shop time to run a stinger ecu and outfront harness instead of my normal microsquirt deal. Just tried to keep it clean and reliable.

Love it! Really clean install for sure. Where did you tap in for the oil feed for the turbo and what material do you use for the water to run front to back ?

The water pipes are 1 1/4 stainless steel, with gates hose connecting that to the motor. I moved the galley plug that has the factory oil pressure switch to the flywheel side of the motor and teed off that for the turbo feed, you can see the vdo sending unit in the pics.

Thanks for the compliment

Just to clarify you've now 'T'd off the new VDO location or where the factory oil pressure switch used to be. Reason I'm asking is I don't want to have a 36" piece of feed for my own install.

Yes I used a T under the vdo sending unit. I don't think you would have a problem moving that galley plug to any of the other locations on the motor though. I'm sure you could easilly get another one of those plugs too, if you wanted to have a dedicated one for the feed.

Wow! Beautiful , clean job. Great attention to detail and stock looking from the street. I'm sure you got a happy customer there. I have a split camper I may put a subie motor in. Normally aspirated. What did you do for the swing axle tranny? Has that been beefed up or regeared for the motor. Also, did you need a rear engine support for the added weight and torque?

Nice Job 8)

Great job. Been wanting to do this in my notch for awhile, but have the design to fit everything under the deck lid. Glad to see you were able to do it

Forgot to update this, car has a subaru 5 speed in it now. Took some work to get everything working properly but the end result is pretty awesome.
