Using Bugpak Hideaway muffler for Suby bug
Still in planning stages, but it came to me that something like a Bug Pak Hideaway style muffler (that tuck under passeneger fender) would be a good solution for a non-turbo conversion. Been done?

I loved that muffler on my stock engine. My only complaint is that it wouldn't fit with my rear disk brake conversion.

I'm thinking the tubing diameter of the hideaway might be a tad small for a 2+L Suby? I know Magnaflow makes a muffler with inlet and outlet on the same end of the can - so must make a U-turn at the other end. This could be set up the same as a hideaway, but less tubing! The Magnaflows usually come in various tubing sizes as well, so you can pick one that matches your exhaust tubing diameter.

I used one of those bugpack setups on my squareback with a T4, cut and relocated so it laid down flat tucked up by the valve cover.
(There is no room behind the tires on a T3, the engine cooling air channels occupy that space)
Agreed, that style of muffler doesn't flow as well, but you can copy a good idea with a Magnaflow it may work.
IIRC the bugpack used 2" tubing so that shouldn't be a showstopper, probably worth trying it.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

When I get closer, I'll take some measurements. One of the things that I will take into account is the reduced back pressure in the new system relative to as installed in the Imprezza. I mean, I will have 2 less catalytic converters and about 10' less tubing.

This is what I did. Obviously not subie. But similar to hide a way idea. Disc brakes, 2.5" straight through. Nice and quiet, but still allows for awesome performance.

That's the same Magnaflow I use in my Subie conversion.

I've been very impressed with it. Stainless, good flow, and quiet. What more can you ask for?panel wrote:That's the same Magnaflow I use in my Subie conversion.

That's the ~same muffler layout I ended up with on my Bursch exhaust under my T4-swapped square, using a tweaked Bugpack hide-away setup. It worked OK but muffler didn't last long.
That Magnaflow have a part# or know the dimensions offhand?

Do'h
I poked around on Magnaflows website for 5 minutes and never found it.
Gonna take a ruler to the square and see how that might work out.
Currently has to fit under a rear crossbar but I plan for that to go away RSN.
