EJ 22 Neutral Safety Switch/Limp Mode

Post by ullr »

I have a 98 EJ 22 in a 72 Westy that I have put 8k miles on and I keep having issues with the ECU going into limp mode when slowing down especially from highway speeds to a stop. I have searched exhaustively and tried the following fixes to no avail.

Grounded the MT/AT identified lead to show the ECU that it is a manual.

Used a relay tied to the reverse light circuit to periodically unground the circuit.

Added a self grounding switch to the clutch to interrupt the circuit each time I push the clutch in.

Ungrounding the lead, allowing the ECU to read 5 volts all the time-This is even worse and results in stalling.

Permanently grounding the lead.

I am also running a VSS

Am I missing something or does anyone have an out of the box solution to this problem?

I had just about the same issues and mine were solved by permanently earthing the NSS wire. I had tried all the above as well, even making my own vss wheel taking in to account the larger tyres etc.. Mine was a 96 Ej22 though, if you still have the diagnostic port you can scan it and see what the ECU is seeing?
