#3 typically runs a bit hotter than #4.

For warm up purposes it won't matter a whit.

You may want to wrap some insulation foam tape around it except where it makes contact to prevent external air temps or loose cooling air from messing with the reading.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I think it was just on 4 because that one is easiest to get to.

It really doesn't matter what cylinder you place it on. You can even put it on the engine case. It's basically there to regulate the warm-up cycle for the MS which you can set to whatever you want anyway. It's not being used as a true CHT gauge to see if your motor is running too hot, it merely senses heat to lean out the mixture.

Before I switched to Mario's sensor, I used a sensor in my valve cover. Since it would take quite a while for the oil to come up to temp I had to have my WUE tapered down by 85F. Again, you set the taper, so as long as it's reaching a heat source it'll work fine.

I have mine on #2 just because it is closer to my harness.

It's basically just for warmup enrichment unless you have the experience and knowledge of the likes of Piledriver to setup up more of the features of MS.
