Front brake upgrade--- BMW 2002Ti 4 piston calipers.
Edit: Finally adding pic...
bmw4pots.JPG
These have the same bolt pattern and offset as 411/412/early 914 calipers..
...Meaning they are a direct bolt on for a late Type 3.
The only thing somewhat futzy about them is they are dual circuit, so you need a "T" and 2 brake lines.

I reused the old lines that I has oh-so neat on the Pile 914, so they lines are fugly, will redo as time permits.

I had to use a thick hardened washer under mine, but I had machined 1/8" off the mounting surface of the calipers to fit late 914.
I bought them rebuilt at Oreillys a few years ago and ate the core charge.
TIP: Take them apart and apply synthetic caliper grease under the seals or they will rust in use. The rebuilders assemble dry...

It not surprisingly stops like the 914  ... I'm hoping they won't be too much in the wet.
(bigger rear wheel cylinder might help, if exists, IIRC the std T3 rear cylinder is the bug front)

Still making a support bracket for the "T" where the original hose connects, pics will follow.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

My type 3 have original 4 piston calipers and dual brake ciruts in both calipers
The break circuts contains both front wheels and one rear wheel eatch.

The BMW calipers would be easier to set up that way, as they are dual feed.
I used a "T".and some short hardlines, and installed a mounting bracket for it.

Pics really will come soon, busy...

Fastbacks, and most Squarebacks, had 22.2mm rear wheel cylinders - 311 611 067C
Super Beetle fronts are actually the very same 23.8mm parts - 361 611 067A - used on Squarebacks through VIN 315220883. Many a later Type III has already been unintentionally changed over to these.

Standard Beetle wheel cylinders - 22.2mm from `58-up - won't fit the ~9.8" brakes (for that matter, neither would the 25.4mm ones from an early Squareback with ~9" drums).

Thanks or the clarification!

Had a chance to try it in the rain 2 days ago, no issues under any level of braking on any surface, stops like I thew out an anchor and snagged a stump, no excitement. The front did lock up first on gravel, but not too much, and that is "correct" as the rears locking up first is unsafe at any speed.

I only did it to see how it worked as I had a set o the BMW calipers on the 914 that I'll no longer be needing, but after living with them on the T3 for awhile I'll keep them... Nice upgrade.

I would probably feel more comfortable with the SB front cylinders as larger rear cylinders and perhaps changing to dual circuit on the 4 pots, that may come later, right now it works great!

That was factory?

It'd be the first one I'd ever heard of.

It's possible some industrious PO of Stefans car did the same upgrade in the distant past and went ahead and did the dual circuit mod as well. It would almost be easier than the "T" at the calipers. (welding new inner mounts for the 2nd set of hoses is the only thing that wouldn't be straightforward)

The BMW calipers bolt on, look like they belong there...not even trimming of the splash guard.

Cool, I wonder if they used the same calipers?

Stefan- thats pretty sweet that there was a optional 4 pot brake upgrade, I learn new stuff everyday.

I have driven PD's squareback and those brakes are amazing, for a driver they are perfect.

I would love to see some pics of this. I picked up some late model front spindles and some of the larger Type 4 calipers to put on my '69 Square. But I originally wanted to go the BMW caliper route but could find little info or pictures of it done.

I'll take pics this weekend, work gets in the way etc.

I'd like to see pics of the factory 4 pot setup to compare.
