custom fiberglass or alloy shroud made for a Type 3 motor

Hi

My friend wants to use a Type 3 "flat" motor in his Fiberglass buggy ,

Its going to be out in the open so can be seen from the back ,

I seen to remember back in an old Hot VWs that someone made up a fiberglass shroud that used the stock crank mounted fan and pulley , I am pretty sure that was a Type 3 motor but might be a Type 4 ,

Any ideas ? It can be fiberglass or metal , I just want to send him some ideas and let him go from there

I wouldn't do anything experimental or custom. I've see both T1 upright and T3 pancake shrouds used in street buggies. Just do a search.

Using exhaust systems like https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=sa ... &FORM=IGRE do cover the engine hiding a lot of it. SS or chromed hides best. Don't use the "twin Bazookas" as they are loud and do not give the best fuel mileage.

We are more looking to build something that would have been on a Fiberglass buggy built for early 70s Custom car show,

let everyone scratch their heads on what it is , but it needs to be Type 3 low , not Type 1 height

has anyone seen a test on how a "stock" Type 3 engine cools compared to a Type 1 with doghouse cooler
and what "hot spots" does the Type 3 cooling make that needs to be looked at ?

I am thinking about hotter head temps, air not getting around cylinder fins and the oil cooler in the way of airflow to #3

I don't remember where it was at but I saw a glass buggy on like that had a lift up rear section that looked almost like they had cut the back off an old buggy that had the rear not cut up so high and the grafted in piece was more curved/arc shaped. It looked like they grafted/attached it on with a hinge.

I hadn't seen one like that before. I now wish I had copied it like I was going to but got side tracked and forgot to go back and do it. I tried to find it today but so far not but I will keep on looking.

the story with glass buggies like that was the local laws required the pulley and fan belt covered , so kids could not get their fingers cut off !

Empi had a complete wrap around body kit for the IMP that covered the motor, not much good for an off road buggy but was a great design for a street buggy.

This is for a type I. I thought that there was a similar one for a "pancake engine"; maybe it was for the Corvair (remember I am old ). I would think that one could be made cheaper than adding a whole rear body section. The Corvair used to be a fairly common swap into a glass buggy.

Although the Corvair is also a pancake engine is quite a bit different: this is one is a stock Chevy design and one of the things that are/were available to cover the pulley system. I seem to remember there being other styles also.

The question now would be: could you or would you want to build something like or based on this idea but at the same time don't limit your imagination either.

The nice thing about the stock t3 fan intake tin is it completely encloses the fan belt, you would just need to add an intake screen of some sort, expanded metal or such.

They make chrome paint these days that actually looks better than most real chrome plating.

The magnesium fan housing can also be polished if desired.
