oil cooler heater?

Post by digger »

has anyone ever tried to use an external oil cooler as a heater?i've been toying with this idea for yrs now.the only fluid in the car is the oil,so why couldn't you mount an oil cooler with a small cooler fan behind it.the oil gets as hot as the coolant in a normal car.i have already weighed the risks.my bug is a baja with no back seat so i have plenty of mounting options

It works great ...in the summertime.
When it's actually cold out, won't keep your toes even slightly warm.
(I have actually considered adding oil "coolers" in the hot air outlet stream to aid fast oil heating)

I actually tried to waterjacket a tailpipe, once.
(wrapped with copper tubing/covered)

The BN2 install now in the trunk says it all.
THAT works.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

A thread on some "alternative" heater setups which might be an interesting read is linked below. The oil-cooler-in-the-cabin idea's been tried many times; as a rule the results aren't worth the effort, but give it a go if you want...after a half-hour or so, it should at least defog the rear window.
