936 a reBUILD thread

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Rear tires are back on, the carb is rejetted, and the oil is topped up.
Fired it up last knight and she sounds great.
See you in Vernal next week.

OK, just found this thread tonight. Not sure how I missed it way back when, but I have not been on much lately sorry to say. Super great progress, info and stories talking about the car and races.

Wow, it's been awhile since I posted in this thread.
Had to miss the last BOR race in Jackpot back in July, we were there to help put on the race just not racing, because we found what we think was the cause of our ring & pinion troubles.

We think the side cover was cracked for some time and flexing when a load was put on it thus taking out the ring & pinion.

Now THAT'S an interesting one! I can't say I've ever broken that in a heavy duty side plate. I've seen it broken like that in a stock cast mag side plate though.

No one that I have talked to has ever seen this, I guess there is always a first.
I think it has been cracked for some time and finally broke all the way around this last time.
We also replaced the case because it had a crack from one of the side cover studs heading to one of the pinion bearing retainer studs.
Now I just need to get it back in the car for the next race Sept. 10th in Vernal, Ut.

So what caused that sidecover failure? too much wheel travel? Internal damage? External force?
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

The trans had a broken reverse gear at one time and it ended up taking out the ring and pinion, I think, but not sure, that when the tooth of the reverse gear got caught in the R&P it may have cracked the side cover. The cover was never checked because no one had seen one break before.

The trans is back in the car and the axles and tubes are on, still need to bolt them to the spring plates. We also replaced the lower heims in the shocks as they were loose.

Ok then, I have to go to Atlanta for work. I am one of the top 36 Jaguar parts countermen in the country (ranked 2) and I am invited to the Guild challenge to compete with the other 35. The top 8 then get invited to go to Vienna Austria in Sept. for a week all expenses paid.
I will be back in the car for Jackpot in July.
