936 a reBUILD thread

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

936 a reBUILD thread

Post by BAJA-IT »

Sense the car was built back in 1996, I thought I would call this a rebuild thread and show what I am doing to the car as things are repaired, modified or just updated.

This winter we are updating the steering with new bearings, u-joints, shaft and steering wheel coupler. We are also going through the engine. Replacing the pistons and cylinders, after getting sanded earlier in the year. We will also be replacing the bearings and what ever we find worn when we split the case. The heads have already been looked at and had to have some guides replaced, but are now ready to go back on the engine. New oil hoses will be going on the car the winter also.

The car has had lots of repairs over the years as thing have broken. I may get some of those pix up too.

Here is the shaft after it came out of the car
Image

I had to cut the shaft to get it out because I didn't have the same u-joint when one went bad and had to weld it in.
Image

Had a box show up the other day and these were in it.
Image

And another box showed up with these in it.
Image

Here is the old mount for the shaft, modified once before.

Here I am cutting off the old mounts.

Mounts all cleaned off.

Of all the paths you take in life, make sure a few of them are dirt.

Glad you started this thread. It'll show what goes into a winning race car. Now if you could just convince some of us Utah slackers to build you some competition....

I may have some pictures of interest for this thread. Let me check.

I got them from Woodward Steering on the internet.

The ones I got are splined on both ends and can be replaced easily if needed.

I made a couple of fire extinguisher mounts for the car over the Summer.

This is the second one.

The first one I made mounted in the car ready to go.

Thought i would post up some carnage pixs from days past. Some of the fun parts of racing.

These are from breaking an axle.

Inside of the axle tube retainer with axle.

Bell from the axle tube.

Spade end of axle.

And the side cover.

This is what happens when you get tagged by a 5-1600. This happened at the Balls Out race at Barstow I believe in 2006. I was about a 1/4 mile from the finish right in front of our pits. Didn't even get a sorry from the guy that hit me.

Here's where it turned into a low rider...........well one side did anyway.

And a better pic of the cause.

This last set is what happens when you roll the car at around 40-45 mph. Car rolled 4 times and landed on the wheels. Only scrapes and bruises to the occupants. Well it did hurt my pride a little......ok a lot. :(

Bent the left front trailing arms.
Image
Without the tire and wheel.
Image

Bent the top of the engine cage, right side.
Image

Smashed the KC light.
Image

Bent the spare tire hold down/jack handle/lug wrench.
Image

Cracked the left rear down tube weld from previous repair.
Image

Cracked the exhaust.
Image

Even popped the center out of the passengers PTT button.
Image

Also destroyed the right rear wheel, no pix though. We had to pry it off with the lug wrench to put the spare on.
