936 a reBUILD thread

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Sense it was raining all day Saturday and I couldn't work on the Baja, I went down to my dad's house and worked on the race car.

The axle tubes are now installed on both sides, all the way to the brake drums.

Now I need to add gear oil and install the starter and I can reinstall the engine. Shouldn't take long to have it ready to race again.

You have had 2 ring and pinion gear failures in recent years that I know of. Both at BAP. I always remember your car finishing so not having many/any failures in the past. Why do you think they are failing? The quality of the material the gears are being made of? Or???

Dyke jump is nice and smooth. There's a few other holes out there that are pretty bad though.

The hole we think did it is between mile 5 and 6 on the course. We hit it pretty hard.

Yeah the dyke jump is smooth, but its an opportunity to get a substantial difference between wheel speed and ground speed. That is one of the worst issues for a gear box. But there are many opportunities for harsh treatment for gear teeth around there.

Trans is filled with gear lube, starter is back in and the axel nuts are torqued.
Time to put the engine back in and the rear cage on.

Did a leak down on the engine yesterday
#1: 99/100 1%
#2: 99/100 1%
#3: 93/100 7%
#4: 97/100 3%

The leakage on #3 is into the case, so I think the rings may have lined up. No hiss in the exhaust or intake.
Should have the back end buttoned up soon.

Not sure Tim, I would have to check with my engine builder (my Dad) but I think it has 6 or 7 races on it now.

The engine is back in and all hooked up, air, elec., oil and throttle. The rear cage is back on with all it's war wounds. Need a new bungee for the right limit strap and put on the rear wheels and tires, check the brake adjustment with the wheels on and the back end will be ready to go.

Just need to replace one TRE and vacuum the seats and we will be ready for Vernal.

Leave in 12 days, race in 14. :D :D
