Re: junk yard parts for a arm build
I borrowed this from another thread so i wouldn't hi jack that one
I was thinking if the bearing holder is s 10 why not use s 10 parts for brakes and all just a thought.
im willing to try it
CentralWAbaja thanks for the pic'sCentralWAbaja wrote:So.... got to have little fun in the shop yesterday...I got to go back into the "storage" side of the shop and dig out a couple boxes that I had not seen in over a year. Kind like Christmas...
Found my rear trailing arms, micro-stub kit,CV's and axles...Understand that all of that stuff was part of the "Original" parts purchase and has not seen light for a long time.
Started to mock up the rear suspension. That just led to the fact that I have no idea what the heck I am doing. Thanks for the help getting me going guys. Sorry for all the simple questions...sure it will not be the last time.
Micro-stub? What is that, exactly? For those of you that know...that is an easy one. And for guys like me who don't/didn't...Well here is the "Anatomy of a micro-stub"
Pull the center cap and the 5 center lugs
And you will remove a well made 5lug to wide 5lug "Adapter plate"
Pull the rotor and you will see that it is a serviceable steel rotor mated to a machined aluminum center.
Separate the stub axle from the hub assembly
Flip the hub over and you have your basic bearing/hub combo (I cant see a part# anywhere) I am sure it is a "Standard" hub of some sort. Looks just like the ones I just replaced in the front of my Dakota a few months ago. Probably out of a Chevy S-10 or something? I am sure somebody out there knows for sure.
Anyway...Never seen it broken down before so I thought I would take a few minutes and do it here...

Something to be aware of on a rear 60 is that not all the spindles are the same.
What about using a whole 2wd pickup knuckle though? Seems like it would be plenty strong and saves you a bunch of engineering.

The front end from a 99-07 fullsize chevy is the same as well. As was said before, not all dana 60 parts are the same. Try to keep it brand specific, as there are plenty of them out there. You going to use a std. engine/trans/transfer case combo, or keep it transaxle?

Re: junk yard parts for a arm build
When dealing with the 2" snouts, there is a difference in the bolt-on and weld-on type, concerning offset of the caliper bracket (you can see the offset in the pics you posted). That is if you are looking for off-the-shelf stuff. The difference can run into the 1,000's... so keep that in mind when you are designing it out... not ALL are created equal.

Re: junk yard parts for a arm build
Disclaimer!!!! I have no idea what hub assembly mine made is out of. I was being a little tongue & cheek when I said "probably" S-10. I have no clue actually.
Mine are the ProAm Sportsman with the 11.25 rotor. I suppose if I was going to make something like it, I would build around somebody's easily available rotor(ProAm-CNC-Wilwood) and you could make the adapter plate to fit what ever hub you wanted...pick one that is not the more expensive as they will differ.
Do you own research as I know you will.
It will be fun to follow along. let me know if you want any more info.
As for using the entire assembly from another vehicle (s-10 or otherwise) I can see some good and bad there
Weight= not so good compared to these aftermarket set ups.
DOT approved parts= a good thing if you are going to be on the streets. one of the things that will kill me if I ever have to get mine inspected.

i would like to run a big vented rotor of an s 10 on the back of my car makes build brake pads and rotors easy.

Re: junk yard parts for a arm build
The unit bearings are available in different bolt patterns, such as 5 x 4 3/4 and 5 x 4 1/2 as well as different splines depending on which vehicle it comes from. For the front snouts how about looking at Dana 35 and Dana 44 TTB front ends, very popular with the prerunner truck guys. Dana 44 snout can be found on full size Bronco/F150 TTB's and the Dana 35 on 4x4 Explorers and Rangers 89 and newer TTB front ends.

Re: junk yard parts for a arm build
I would still go to the fullsize hub/bearing. More aftermarket backing it up, as well as more readily availible. The hub is the same for the 4wd, so there you go. I know my 2500hd uses at least a 930CV, if not bigger. Look into what the CORR guys use, I think it is 2500hd parts for the front end, which would go to your back end/ brakes. Good job in thinking outside the box.

Re: junk yard parts for a arm build
My Thinking is that most parts in off road racing where derived of parts scavenged of other cars
A 7/8" linkpin for example is the same as a 22mm bus link pin . some of the old school guy used bus arms and spindles in there bajas.
Most people don't reinvent the wheel . I just see it as reverse engineering .
And if i can build a really big and nice car on a budget i like to share that information with other like minded people.
This is all research for my big 4 door build
Im going to draw the hole car out on paper and create a parts list before i start.
If i go with 6 lug hubs it will make it finding rims easier with more options.
