Tim went racing...
It's official... I nucking futs!! My garage is full, my yard is full, and I 'needed' to bring home this. At least I'm not in denial, I have a disease.
Realistically, I should have waited before I bought "Rusty". I'm not a fabricator, and after trying to figre out where to start on my 5/1600, I have lots more respect for those that are. I've been putting my spare energy into the hospital and the patients there, something I'm good at, and in exchange I had enough to buy this. Rusty will sit, waiting for the day that I feel I can build it up, then the parts from this buggy will be moved over to make my 5/1600, until then, I will learn how to race.
This direction, a used - proven - race car, is the direction I should have gone in the first place. It's got all the parts, the cammed-out high-compression 1600cc engine, brand new single port heads, the 5 rib 002, the 930's, +1 rear trailing arms, aluminum rims, rack and pinion, race ready font trailing arms, combo spindles, dual master cylinder brakes with balance bar, hydraulic clutch, fuel cell, parker pumper, solid frame, trim, fire extinguishers, Fox shocks all around, etc. It finished it's last race respectably, and also passed tech inspection for the Mi7 debacle in Utah. It also came with three spares, also on aluminum rims, and a pit box full of goodies. But... It's got some dings, some surface rust, some wear and tear, a wiring issue, etc. It needs some TLC. $6500, that was the "club price" for the local racing organization. The person I bought it from had owned it a year, fix a few things, raced it once, then sold it to me for the same price he got it for (Thanks Dan!!).
I'm really happy. This is right up my alley. I like to disect, diagnose and fix. I like to improve the little things.... save an ounce there, a little extra strength here, etc. I believe I've found something that fits my budget, skill set, attention span, and workshop limitations. This IS, after all, supposed to be fun instead of a constant worry.
So... Here I sit. It's 16 degrees outside and I'm waiting to go out and try to start the chokeless, cold-blooded, ethanol-sucking bastard up and get it into the garage where I can feel it up and caress it down without any risk of being caught.
It doesn't have a name yet, but it will...

FREAKING SWEET! That is a killer deal. Sounds like you just need to do all the cage work for the class 5 car, and then hang all the goodies from this on it. That will save a TON of money.
That engine sounds like a beast. Figuring out how to build a class 5 cage and keep the car light but strong will be fun. I'm sure you've studied Busk's build. Take a look at jp1145's thread as well. He started racing and quickly learned what needed to be beefed up to survive.

I don't always show my signature. But when I do, it's in this area.

This is a good car. It's raced and been competitive in BOR for a long time.

Yea... It took me 25 minutes to get it off the trailer. It doesn't like being cold. Finally a wee bit of starter fluid did the trick.
I'm going to keep it as a 1600 car for now, maybe forever. I'd like to get racing before life throws a turn. Hopefully make the wendover race (night race ) as my first, we'll see. It's all talk right now.

You should be able to have it ready by June. I know you will have fun with this car. Racing is even more fun than working the check points. And our crew will be there to help with the pitting!

I'm glad you got that car. I thought about it, hard, very hard, but the last thing I need is another car, especially one that needs TLC. And I have no place currently to put it. Looking forward to the build. Also, with a slight motor de-tune it would be a killer Champ Car in SNORE.

Heck Yeah!!!
"$3500"
Have you been watching out for Ford Crown Victoria sedans with men wearing aviator sunglasses, with binoculars and long lens cameras lurking around your place? What a steal! That's down in the price range of short back swingaxle rails with no panels, nets, skidplates or roof, fiberglass seats, no front brakes or shocks, 1/2 rusted steel spoke wheels, worn out tires, EMPI coilover rear shocks and a stock single port with no air filter.
I say keep racing this! 1600 Buggy is my favorite offroad class of all. I love 5-16s, but...
So a little prep and you're ready to race! That is a fine chassis which should be plenty competitive, provided the driver and prep are up to it. Don't fret about the drum brakes or the shocks not being the latest stuff. At the MORE 5-16 ShootOut race this past year with the best 35 5-16 racers from the US and Mexico, the winner had drum brakes and extended (+1) stock trailing arms with 1990s shocks.
Oh, BTW...Some of the components on this are not 5-16 approved. Like the balance bar dual master cylinder pedal assembly. Rules require stock pedals and master cyl. For 1600 buggy they're OK.

Re: Tim goes crazy...
Since you have a 1600, you might want to think about sticking with that class for a while, then stepping up to 5-Unlimited/12 when you feel the need for more speed. 1600 is a great class, usually a lot of competition.

Re: Tim goes crazy...
Thanks all for the kind words and offers of help, I'll most definitely need help. I was sleepless last night figuring the most efficient way to jump out, add gas, and jump back in. I'm hoping I can get my family involved with the effort, but time will tell. My wife's first concern was with the life insurance policy; My twin teen daughters seem detatched from any semblance of reality; My 8 year old is gung-ho and ready, but is too young to ride with and too young to leave in the pits by herself. We will be working on her "buggy", too, and hopefully enter her into a PeeWee race.
I do plan on keeping the 1600 class for the forseeable future. The more I researched it, the more I liked the benefits...
1. popular class = better/quicker resale
2. Low breakage = more finishes/longer season
One disadvantage I found was the higher cost to enter the class, but so far-so good there.
The biggest maintenence issue with the class 1600's that I found in searching was lack of suitable long-term-use rear torsion bars. I guess they have a habbit of breaking.
So... I've been poking around the car. A few things I've found already, but managable. Unfortunately, I've worked my days off away and need to get back to work tomorrow, so progress will be slow to start.

Thanks Mr. It. I envy your long term racing career and ability to get the whole family involved. Thanks for your offer of support. Although I now have a car, I also need to afford saftey gear, parts, etc. so that's why I'm thinking July will be the earliest. I will still make it to Caliente with or without car to help out (and to watch all the SNORE 1600 racers).BAJA-IT wrote:You should be able to have it ready by June.
