Race Radio setup and laws.

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Hahahaha. How did I know BIG Dave didn't have a little antenna. Nice setup.

Did you notice a difference between Kyle's mobile setup and yours?

I agree with the nice loud front firing speaker of the 281.

We pretty much just used mine in the morning before Dave got out and set his up, but it worked excellently. I could hear the far end of the course with no problem, relayed for the neighbors, and talked to Main with no issues. I have an external speaker as well as the radio one. Set up on the hood, it was plenty loud at half volume, at least until the trucks starting coming by between us and the radios. I was parked farther away from our spot across the track, and there wasn't much traffic on Weatherman, so we just kept Dave's on and used the scanners to monitor Weatherman. My antenna is a permanently mounted, cut to tuned unit that Cameron had made for me. He could tell you more. The scanners just use the stubby antenna that came with, but you can use an external one.

Ironically, Casey's radio was about the worst transmitting one on the course. He had to have a lot of relaying done. It was also entertaining to listen to Weatherman's rants...but more on that in my story. I'm about half done.

Dave... so you were happy with that set-up? Anything you'd change?

Does any one have a good recommendation of a place to get some radios programmed in SoCal? We may need to change some channels in our radios for NORRA and our setups are pretty old and need a professional to work on them.

In regards to a handheld unit, Rugged Radios just came out with a new handheld that we are probably going to try:

Little bit cheaper than that scanner Kyle posted, and more than just a scanner.

Rugged or PCI should be able to do it for you if you are close to either one.

Why pay for the rugged brand? All that is is.a rebranded and marked up item...

You can find these for $35 to $45 all day long. And there is no need to modify it as it comes with full frequency transmit from the manufacturer.

Pretty happy with the setup. I can't think of anything I'd change.

I bet you did, we just didn't say much. ;). We checked in at 0530, and again when the lead cars passed us. Otherwise we didn't have anything to report all day.

Quite a few of us have picked up the Baofengs and plan on using them this weekend at the BOR race in addition to our base units. I'm hoping with the pits only 7 miles from any point on the course, they'll work well. The course is about double that end to end. Keep you posted...

The south end of the WSA may be a problem, when you drop down in that canyon they radios wont always reach out. But otherwise they should be good.
