Finally broke my spindle

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Doing a bit of research on the interweb it seems that Neal is the only company that I can find that made/makes a 4 lug disc brake kit to fit a kingpin spindle. It is part #66-550D. If Jim is running these then the only thing he needs to do is get the proper bearings for combo spindles

I was told it was a ball joint setup, but when I asked him at the track, he said no and showed me. I'm almost 100% positive he has stock link pin spindles. How he got four lug discs... I don't know.

Maybe a little reverse engineering... Either look at the bearing numbers to get an OD, or meaure the inside of the disc, then compare to combo bearings...

http://www.timken.com/en-us/products/Do ... _Guide.pdf

Inner race 15244 = OD of 2.441" (62mm)

Outer race 07204 = OD of 2.047" (51.994mm)

Do you need new brakes, Jim? or are you happy with the disc's you have? Maybe it's as simple as getting the new bearings and spindles.

4 lug disks on lp spindles. Although dropped spindles...maybe someone sells them with a standard height as well.

Here's another post to verify those dimentions and gives some info on combos. Also gives bearing and race numbers.

If your discs have 62mm inner and 52mm outer I'd say it would work.
2 ea Timken Inner bearing # 15123
2 ea Timken Inner race # 15244
2 ea Timken Outer bearing # 07100
2 ea Timken Outer race # 07204
2 ea Timken Outer combo seal # 471831 or equal

I have Type 3 ball joint disc brake hubs on my king pin spindles. I got the bearings from Appletree but don't remember the numbers. I think Jims is the same setup as what I have on my yellow buggy.

CB drop spindles have "ball joint" sized stubs with the bigger BJ size bearings even on the link pin versions. A nice upgrade. I wish they made the same thing but lifted instead of dropped.

just mount them on the opposite sides of where they go and you'll be good!

but it will require a set of "kustom" tie rods

Tweeds lifted BJ spindles for those of you who aren't lucky enough to find a thing set.

What I want is stock height link pin spindles, but with the bigger ball joint spud/stub. Those parts never break even on beat to sh!t class11 cars. The later stuff is strong in the stub/bearing department.

Then you just run 67 bug front drums for brakes.

For some reason, I seem to remember (and you know my memory at my age) that this question was asked of Mark a while back and I just don't remember the answer being a yep or a nope! It might be worth a couple of minutes of typing to see what he says or knows.

Thanks for the comments. They are very helpful. I will fight the good fight at looking for the right bearing. If I do find them, I will report back.

Jim, if it turns out to be odd sized (like my rear axle bearings were), I found this search tool very helpful. You can search by the size (od and id) and load bearing capacity you need. I found a transmission bearing stocked at my local store that fit my rear axle by using this search.

The spindles (or spuds) can be purchased many places and then welded to your carriers after you cut your spindles off. My old buggy was kingpin with balljoint spindles and my new buggy is kingpin with combo spindles. Not to difficult with good MIG.
Good luck
