TO grease or not TO grease.

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

What spindles/bearings with the 944 hubs?
The 944/911 cast aluminum hubs have a bad rep in road racing circles, at least to the point where they should be replaced regularly. You are probably beating them harder.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

They aren't the aluminum ones, glad I don't have those. Bought them from a Euro junkyard, many years ago.

Type 1 rear trailing arms have the three spacers that ride against inner race of the bearings. Are that arms w/hubs you are using similar to the type 1 units?

Yes, the 924 and 944 rear wheel bearing setup is identical - even uses most of the same components. https://images.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=htt ... 85.gif&f=1

Thanks Marc. I was a little confused when "spindles" were used at the state of the string; also I haven't dealt with the 944 components before so I wasn't sure.

Hmmm... I referred to front brakes because...
I am doing the bearings on the spindles
So, like Lee, this confused me...
Rear IRS, aftermarket 3X3, 944 hubs .
Regardless, I don't like to fully pack a hub with grease because heat expansion of the grease then makes for leakage. But my preferred grease for hubs is boat trailer wheel bearing grease.

Sorry for the confusion guys. I think next time I will use the Boat trailer grease, will surely help with the water crossing.

Oooooooh yea!

Keep an eye on the condition of the seals if you are going swimming with it too.  Cheaper than bearings... most of the time anyway.

I also seal VW front hub dust caps with silicon after they're installed. Then wipe the wet silicon with soapy water or saliva. Keeps dirt out and grease in.

For stock spindles with the speedo cable through the middle, make sure the cable seal is in place and in good shape. Silicon will serve here as well. Last time I had water inside a VW front hub was in the early 70s before I started using the silicon.

In theory, front dust caps are metal to metal seal and should not leak. Most of them DO leak some. That's why the silicon.

Only if the dust caps are still round Dusty.

Extra grease in the hub is good if you need some extra grease on a trail repair.

Hammer to shape, bondo to fill, silicon to seal, and paint to match.
