SNORE Battle at Primm race 2/10-13, 2017

Post by dustymojave »

Are any of the rest of you folks attending the BAP this year? We are leaving Thursday to head out there. Warren will be racing in one of the ORAF/AGS/Lone Kid Racing team cars. It's not real certain which one yet. Probably one of the 5/1600s.

I expect we will be pitting near the beginning of the straight after the course exits the infield short course part of the course like the last 2 years. That could change when we get there. We might be in the parking lot or along the front straight or even out in the south pit area across from the mall.

66one - two33 - three three 4 three

My radio is not working at the minute. Might be fixed before we go. Don't know what channel to tell you. Phone would be better for initial contact.

Daron, you should have just ordered some more fun chips on Amazon or ebay so they would have arrived in time.

Think I have my radio (Baofeng UV-82 V2+) working now. Programmed a bunch of off road race frequencies. It will probably be mostly tuned to 150.010 (ORAF), 151.160, 151.295, or 151.370, the last 3 being AGS Racing channels.

I can call Kyle on his phone. I'll watch for Cameron.

Anybody else?

I'm probably signing off the web until next week.

I'd like to say I raced BAP this year. I can say I was there. Got to meet a couple of guys in the tech line yesterday, Tim and Kyle, nice to put a face with the names. Then we find out later that we were supposed to have qualified earlier in the morning. Nice that we found out too late. It was posted on fb and now we know to read fb for the latest information. All ready to run this morning and took off strong on time middle of the pack only to have the motor lay down and die after about 1/2 lap. Some kind of oil issue I'd guess.
Loaded it up and headed for home to race another day.

Great weekend, all told. I AM writing again and will post the fully edited version here in a few days along with pics and videos. It was great to meet Mitch, without the STF sticker on his car and the Hedrock Fab visor, that may have never happened! Cam finished 8th in class I believe (with a broken transaxle), the cars Dusty were pitting for were a mixed bag, but I do know one was a DNF and I believe one of the others was first or second. There were also several trucks in our camp.

I'm tired. See you all on the flipside.

OK. Time for the Dusty report on the 2017 Battle @ Primm.

I was there with a loosely affiliated (you're right Kyle) mixed bag team.

My son Warren (3Gtech) was shotgun in the Lone Kid Racing 5/1600 Baja Bug with new owner Donald Harper driving.

Pitted with us were also the 2 AGS 5/16 Baja Bugs of Art Savedra (Art is the Chief of Tech for SCORE), one driven by Art on Saturday with Cheryl, the owner of Motorsports Safety Gear (driving suits) riding shotgun. Then on Sunday that car was driven by Steven Fuentes with his soon-to-be wife in the navigator seat.

The other AGS Baja was driven by Art's son Guy with Steven Fuentes riding Saturday, and Art on Sunday.

Reuben Garcia drove his 5/16 Baja number 570 with his son Reuben Jr. riding Saturday and his daughter Marlene riding Sunday. Reuben cheats  ...His kids are in High School, Jr weighs about 125lbs and Marlene weighs maybe just over 100lbs. Young and slim is a good thing sometimes.

Also pitting and camping with us was Mark Winston with his new bright green 5/16 Baja from Colorado with Brian Johnson riding Saturday and our team monster Chris Moo squeezed in Sunday. Chris is 6 foot too many inches and near 400 lbs of beef. He's great for handling dump cans in the pit, but probably needs to race in a larger truck-type vehicle. Great guy though.

The King group had their 5/16 Baja pitted with us too.

Then there were the "Crazy Indians", Monte Tibbets and his Sioux Indian group from South Dakota with their Lone Kid Racing Class 8/SNORE Heavy Metal Dodge truck, along with the other truck in the class (I didn't even catch their names).

2 pits over were the Ledezma race team with their late 80s 5/1600 SCORE champ. They still run drum brakes and don't race it often these days, but when they show up they're always one of the fastest 5/16 Bajas in the desert.

Rulo Solano was racing the Lone Kid 2/1600 with his brother Cesar riding shotgun.

Here's the results for the 5/1600 class:

Class 5-1600
Place No. Name Car Laps Total Time
01 - 570 - Ruben Garcia - VW - 8 - 02:06:55.4661
02 - 557 - Mario Jr Ledezma - VW - 8 - 02:09:55.0792
03 - 551 - Michael King - VW - 8 - 02:10:26.7383
04 - 552 - Robert Gross - VW - 8 - 02:15:37.0984
05 - 555 - Danny Garcia - VW - 8 - 02:25:20.9075
06 - 598 - Stuart Dahlin - VW - 8 - 02:26:24.6846
07 - 563 - Nick Gross - VW - 8 - 02:26:56.2877
08 - 589 - Eric Johnson - VW - 8 - 02:31:54.9648
09 - 568 - Art Savedra - VW - 8 - 02:32:39.7269
10 - 596 - Mark Winston - VW - 8 - 02:34:24.06710
11 - 569 - Guy Savedra - VW - 6 - 01:36:20.64311 - Trans broken after 2nd on Saturday
12 - 599 - Brandyn Kaylor - VW - 4 - 01:04:33.172

DNF:
13 - 559 - Donald Harper - VW - 4 - 01:06:27.624 - Distributor cap broken at start on Sunday after
4th Saturday
14 - 562 - Shannon Fisher - VW - 4 - 01:10:52.858 - Unk
15 - 585 - Travis Baldwin - VW - 3 - 00:51:32.929 - Unk
17 - 577 - Mitch Hedrick - VW - 0 - 00:00:00.0 - Engine failure

Some day I may met Mitch. I didn't even know he was there. Kyle, Cameron and Tim didn't mention that he was.

We stopped by Calico Ghost Town on the way home Monday after having breakfast at Denny's sitting at the next table to Cameron and Kyle and their group.

Chris Moo. He is a gas filling and tire changing machine. That is the word on the street anyway. I heard first hand stories of him lifting and dumping 2 - 7 gallon gas cans, one with each arm and flinging a tire around like a frisbee. I was surprised that you were able to fit him in a car but am glad he had the experience.

It was a pleasure meeting your crew, Dusty. A very energetic and fun group. But why did they hide the whiskey when I showed up?

I did expand my pit crew resume to include removing and replacing fiberglass hoods. And I saw the coolest, but bulkiest, homemade quick-jack that I had ever seen. There was also an encore performance from the little old 936 car in the unlimited heat which involved a trophy being given out. I think Kyle has details on that one and will wait for his version.

I ended up finding a seat at the bar next to Bill Shapley Sunday evening. Met some cool people that I had only read about. Drank too much Scotch. I'm pretty sure I was fairly obnoxious at the awards ceremony, but boy was it fun. :D Tedo asked me to pick up his award for him but recanted his offer when I asked if I could give a speech, too.

What a great weekend. Thanks for the Blackley crew for the pit pass (and camp spot). Thanks, too, to Kyle for introducing me to some new folks. I feel as though I got to know Bo a little better. I have the face recognition capabilities of an Apple II+, so I rarely realize who it is I'm talking to and if I've seen them before. This special skill has made my life more interesting. I ended up getting a hotel room on Sunday night.

It was a lot of fun and a good break for me from the daily grind. Such a great atmosphere at the races. Mostly I was fixated on the chase trucks and prerunners for a future build.

On the way home I learned that Elko Ed's property flooded. If you get a chance send along some well wishes to him. He is not online as his computer was underwater. He said his bug was under 39" of water. He is living in his motorhome and bought a new toy... A 2" gasoline powered water pump. Overall he seems in good spirits.
