New guy trans question... I am assembling a pile of parts to build a baja. So far I have a bug w/ a one piece 'glass front end, and a 2.0 type4 from a 914. I want a bus trans. What is the desired one to have? And how strong are they stock? are they strong enough for mild off roading? is there any trouble spots that I should address before it goes in?
And how about CVs. Are the bus CVs acceptable, or should I just step up and buy the 930's? I am planning on running 3x3 rear arms, sway away axles, and long coilovers. I am looking for around 12" of travel. I already have thing stub axles.

Larry ,sounds like you have a good plan for your Baja. Lots of good parts going into it.
Would suggest that you upright your engine though to keep from sucking dust and dirt from the low fan position. FAT has a good low dollar off-road upright shroud kit. As for the transaxle the newer ones are stronger but higher geared. I think you`ll have the power to pull the taller gears though. Also by using the later trans youll be able to use the clutch/flywheel combo you have and it is a good one. There are some issues concerning coupling the T-2 shifter to a bug shift rod but it has all been discussed here at length.
I say if you have the Thing stubs that you should give the Thing CVs a shot.You`ll need Thing or bus axles to use them(shoulder width). They are better than the bus but not as good as the 930s. But need no adapting as does the 930 unit which might be overkill. Good Luck. Bob Ingman

Bob, thanks for the info. Can I ask a favor, & get you to be just a little more specific. You mention the later ones are stronger. Could you give me the years of the later ones? And how about a model number? I see numbers like 002 or 091. Is it one of those I want, or something different ?

Bob, thanks for taking the time to give that advice. I've made the decision already to run a rear mount, and tie it in to the rear engine cage. I will be building a complete front to rear cage, so I will have something secure to fasten it to. I am not using the stock porsche mount, but I will be making a custom tubular mount.
I was looking at my bug today. I am dieing to get started on it. So far I have the bug, a one piece 'glass front end, 'glass rear fenders, a 2.0 type 4, a 091 bus trans, a set of sway a way race runner coil over shocks ( no springs yet- I'll weigh it when it's nearly complete then get them), a weld in roll cage, and 5 point simpson harnesses. and thing stub axles and 2 rear center line wheels. All I need is a front beam, trailing arms, spindles, and rear trailing arms, and it'll be go time. I'll set up an online gallery for you guys to see the progress. Thanks again for the help and advice.

Larry, this is almost unrelated but important. I read the thread on flegs board about using a rear mount when converting to T-4 power. They are telling lies. You do need a rear carrier when installing the T-4 engine in a T-1 chassis.When I met Joe Locicero at his shop and began my plans to do this conversion he told me that it was indeed neccesary. I responded that I do`nt see why becaus the uprighted engine is only 22 lbs heavier . He was quick to inform me that it was not a matter of weight but of torque. The T-4 engine will twist and break the frame horns in a bug sedan.
Jake Raby himself will testify to the destruction of frame horns found in his Bluebonic Plague.
The only exception I`ve seen to this is when a complete T-2 rear torsion tube assembly has been grafted onto a T-1 chassis .Then it is using the bigger heavier frame horns.
