Well tuning is going to have to go on hold til I can sort this out... I pulled the intercooler off and found oil in the inlet track AGAIN. Not happy.

I need to check a few things, but really I think the turbo is going to have to go off to a specialist for a tear down and check-over. :(

Spoke to a local specialist today. The turbo will have come off and got off for a check. I asked him if he wanted to see it in the car, but he was happen enough to see some pics and then pull it down for a check. Hopefully this will sort out the issue and I can get it sorted and back on the car ASAP.

Well, I guess it's just a process of elimination. I've not torched any pistons/heads, so I can't complain too much. And I'm getting to be an expert on pulling the snail off so it's not too hard. Better to find the solution and then I can start having fun. I'm feeling less negative about it now than I was when I found it. My wife is also not so stressed (probably coz she's used to the car being off the road ;) ). I had little issues for a while when I built my subaru powered buggy. First it was the crank angle sensor, then the radiator, etc. Engineers call it "commissioning". When that was all sorted out, I could hop in the buggy and drive it anywhere. I'd drive it too and from motorsport club days with no issues. I'll get there, I just need to be patient and careful.

I just seel it has to be your drain setup.
I haven't seen a good pic of it but a nice straight drain with AN-10 or 5/8ths is the key.

Have you taken the hose off the outlet side of the scavenge pump and started the engine while letting it run into a clean bucket or can???
The turbo needs very little oil so you should be able to let it idle for at least 30 seconds and up to a minute to see how well the oil is coming out of the turbo.
If you are using brass fittings to make 90 degree turns those will be very restrictive and need to either be reamed for better flow or changed out to a piece of tubing that has a nice radius-ed bend in it.

Post a good pic of the complete drain setup of the turbo so I/We can see it better.

Unfortunately, a dead straight drain would run straight into the header. Hence the 90deg fitting. The drain and pump seemed to be working quite well before.

I would give this a try. Would be nice to know that your turbo is draining all its oil. If you didn't see anything coming out of the drain line, you would have a sure answer.
I only have ~1" of slope from my turbo drain port to the sump, and I believe your set up is very similar. Knock on wood, but I haven't had any problems. Something seems fishy down under there.

Well, it's the same turbo with the same issues and the same seals. In between times, I've changed the drain line, the drain end point, the amount of oil, added a scavenge pump and tested the line and pump. They seemed to be draining oil successfully. The ONLY thing that hasn't been changed is the seals, so logically it's the thing that's likely to be causing the issue.

I have not read everything, but do you have a 1,5mm restrictor in the inlet oil feed? Most turbo's seem to be needing that in my (limited) experience. Excess feed usually leads to oil seeping from seals elsewhere, even if the seals are good.

Yeah I have a 1.5mm restrictor on the barrel bolt and another 1mm restrictor in the oil feed line.

Just back from the turbo shop. Turbo is in excellent condition. I need a reservoir (ala Porsche 930) to catch the oil for the scavenger pump to work properly.

This should give you an idea on size etc.

Where's that left hand oil line coming from?

I've got a plan for mine, but it'll look a bit different to that.

Spent some time chopping up metal into smaller bits tonight. Ended up with this...

Image

I've got two options for location...

Image

1. This is compact, but heat could be an issue here.

Image

2. This won't be quite as good for draining, but will be less prone to heat.

Thoughts?
