66 Rag Turbo 1600 Mexican EFI Megasquirt
Hey everyone I'm fairly new to the site besides lurking, and this is my first build thread post. I'll try to update it as things move along. I'm totally new to forced induction on air-cooled VW's, so any tips are appreciated. I have dealt with FI before in many different forms, nitrous, superchargers and turbo's, but the VW's are a new world. Anyways I bought this crusty 66 rag top locally and it was described as having a 1500 dual port. EDIT: Turns out it was a 1600DP. EDIT: (Motor is now 1600DP forged mahle's, W100 and fresh cam bearings. Here are a few pics before the huge garage cleanup of 2016 so please excuse the filthy work area. I have a full EFI conversion with ignition etc being built by Mario as we speak and a little gt-17 to start with. The plan is to run e-85 and see what we can do until something gives, at which point I plan on building a larger turbo'd mouse motor.
So far I've pulled the motor to remove all of the carb'd stuff, and while it's out I'm going to repair the quarter panel/bumper mount pieces while the fenders are off with replacement sheet metal from Wolfsburg West. I'm debating a rancho transmission while it's out as well, any input on which trans to go with and gearing selection would be helpful. I drive the car to vw events around here so I would love freeway flyer gearing but want to be able to spool a larger turbo when that time comes as well. Anyways, enough of the rambling.

Welcome, you will soon learn that boost is 5X more addictive than heroin. You are on the right path with Mario, he is a great guy and his products are top notch and always come with detailed instructions. I have been using E85 for 2 years on my boosted/FI 1776 and like it very much. Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress.

Welkome, the stock 66 trans is a 4:37 Ring&pinion, not very good for turbo app.
see what Rancho recommends or just copy somebody build
my bug likes 3:88 and stock gears

Thanks fellas! Yes boost is very addicting, I love it. I'm thinking I'm going to like it even more in a vw
Glad to hear some other folks are running e85. Luckily we have it at all the sheetz stations here in NC. I'm calling rancho today to talk to them about a trans and gearing.
Thanks again!

I've got a 4:12 R&P in mine, but if I had my time again I'd go a 3:88 too.madmike wrote:Welkome, the stock 66 trans is a 4:37 Ring&pinion,not very good for turbo app.

Re: 66 Rag Turbo EFI Mystery Motor
I'm having a trans put together by rancho as we speak. They recommended 4.12 R&P due to the small displacement of the motor. I'm reading on here that more people are enjoying 3.88 R&P. Would you say 3.88 will be ok with a 1600 motor? Is it torquey enough to pull those gears.
Thanks everyone, and I will be uploading some pictures today of parts coming in !

Re: 66 Rag Turbo EFI Mystery Motor
A few pictures of some parts that have arrived.
At the same time I'm building this turbo setup I will also be fixing rust issues, and there are quite a few. Here is one of the rear quarter pieces that will be getting replaced while the trans and engine are out.
I know they aren't good for high rpm or lots of boost but we aren't there yet. For the time being these single hi revs will be going in as a few people have had luck with smaller turbos and 15+lbs of boost. See above turbo pic for sizing . Also pictured is the install tool from air-coole.net as well as a set of shims.
All star performance 1/4 turn fasteners for the quick removal mod I'll be doing to the apron, as I'm sure the motor will be in and out quite a bit in the future.
Running the turbo I wanted a little extra insurance on having plenty of oil at all times. Small sump made by cb performance going on.
My oil feed and drain lines should be in today from lowbugget, I'll have some pictures of the rust repairs and apron mods in the next few days. Unfortunately I've only been able to stare at the parts as my garage is being repainted and I can't start back to work in it until tomorrow.

What turbo header are you planning using?

Re: 66 Rag Turbo EFI Mystery Motor
Just using a regular 1 5/8" merged header to a 180 bend back up into the engine compartment to the turbo. Haven't decided what size pipe to use from the header to the turbo yet.

Re: 66 Rag Turbo EFI Mystery Motor
I'm using a 3.88 in my car (1600 NA currently), and it works fine. 4th is a little gutless but it will still cruise at 70 under 3500rpms.
3.88 - 3.78, 2.06, 1.26, .89
If it where more race than street the only thing I would change even with my 2276 Turbo is 4th to a .93.
Car is bitchin!!
