Tight coil verified to be on the bottom. Here is my problem. Notice the retainer on the right doesn't seem to come up as high on the keepers as the one on the left. It's noticeable with a ruler across them as well. Any ideas? The retainers were all level with the stockers.

Did you make sure all the retainers have a slight gap when around the valve???

Sometimes you have to sand a little off the flat sides to make sure they don't touch.

Looks like I'm gonna have to grind a little on all the keepers to make sure there is a gap. I'll see what the results are after!

Thanks!

Lay the flat side down on a piece of sandpaper and slide it back and forth so it keeps the edge flat.

New cam bearings are on the way, as well as an engle 100 cam. Ordered a bench tool for valve springs so I haven't gotten to filing down the keepers yet. In the meantime I managed to wrap up the 1/4 turn fasteners on the apron, and mount the fuel pump and filter.

Next step is bend the hardline to the rear of the car, get the motor back together and wait for the trans to get here from Rancho. Starting to see a small light at the end of the :D 8)

More goodies from Mario! This package came the other day, and gave me another nudge towards light at the end of the tunnel. This kit really is awesome. Everything is included down to the last clamp. The wiring harness quality is great! I'm starting to really get pumped about this project!! :D :D

Grind the keepers so they don't touch on both sides, and actually clamp.
They will fit properly and be level then.

You are currently relying on/beating on the grooves in the valve stem.
That is likely to end very badly, the height difference is just the QC of the keepers.

Oh, missed some posts, nevermind.

I just hold keepers in vise-grips and touch them to a grinder for 2 seconds, usually sufficient.
If the vise grips damage them you should throw them out anyway, as they were soft garbage.
They should be harder than vice-grip jaws.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I've since replaced all the retainers with a new set. (I think at least one or two were machined wrong in the last batch.) I lapped the valves, as well.

Thanks everyone

Well I didn't sell it and after it sitting for awhile I've decided to make time for it. She's up and running and had the engine break in done. I'll have some video of it being tuned etc this upcoming weekend. Here is a little idle video when I first got it started up on Wed. Plan is to get it going and see how far we can get on the stock heads and this little turbo. I'm shopping for heads as we speak for 1600cc size motors if you guys have any suggestions. Must be off the shelf and under 600 for the pair if possible
