Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Oh boy. I checked for leaks in the header tonight. I have a bunch. Might be time to just make a new one.
Mine was a rusty old header to start with when I made it like 9 years ago. Everytime I try to weld on it I just blow through. It's pretty ghetto to start with.

Yea u can run these without a fan for a bit I've even gone a 1/4 mile without a belt
Glad u found the leaks ,, wish I could weld my own headers

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Well I did some math last night. Looks like it will cost me about $200 for bends and a collector. I've seen some turbo headers like you listed for $325 raw and $425 coated. So now I'm debating

If you're going to stick with the 1600, you're probably better off building your own with smaller primaries. Most of the commercially available stuff if built for 1916 or larger.
P.s. it is worth getting it coated.

Just build an uppipe onto a cheapo sedan header to give it a try. Mine has worked well for 7 years now and it only cost me a couple bends and some straight pipe to make it fit where my turbo sits.
You can do the same with a sedan if you want to put the turbo in the engine compartment.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
That was how I built mine to start with. I thought my turbo was about as small as they came so I cut it up to shorten the pipes hoping to help spool...which it didn't. I didn't really like the way it looked having to come out and back around to the engine compartment either.
I think I'm going to kind of have to build my own. As said, most are too big of pipe and have t3 flanges and I will be using a Subaru TD04. I found 1.38" stainless bends pretty cheap. Not sure if they would be better than coating mild steel.

Spool has very little to do with exhaust length and/or diameter in my experience.
My exhaust setup is not ideal and it has not really affected my spool at all as far as I can tell.
Turbo sizing is the key.
A T-3 is too big for a 1600 no matter what the experts say......they are trying to sell turbos.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Agreed. When I put this thing together 10 years ago there wasn't much information out there. But I would have to think the the shorter the pipe the better. Just less volume has to help some. I'm sure once I get the smaller turbo on and get a header made that doesn't have 50 leaks it should work pretty well. I have to decide if I feel like trying to blow through that holley or just leave it as is with the drawthrough.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
The advantage of the short turbo header is the heat kept in the gases. That's what powers your turbo. So a shorter, smaller header will make a difference. Whether we can measure than on such inefficient motors is another story. I'll tell what else though... Cooler ambient air temps make a real difference. On hot days, my car is laggy and sluggish. As the air temp comes down in the evening, it's peppy and quick again. Curious stuff.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Yeah that's not good since its hot as hell 10 months a year here!
And grrrrrr! Still seem to have an air leak in what appears to be the intake. I put it on the belt sander at work and I'm wondering if maybe something went wrong there. It didn't seem to leak before but had some porosity in the surface of the metal that I wanted to get rid of. Maybe I will see if I can get the guy at work to put it on the mill to be sure it's flat.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
I'm sure there is something like that around here.
I get a change in idle speed when I spray carb clean near one of the carb bolts. So I can tell about where it is but I didn't really see anything that looked like it would leak. I'm going to pull it all back off again tonight for another look. I'm hoping I have another gasket handy here at work. I keep my car at work so that's why I'm always trying to work on it after. My neighborhood wouldn't care much for me starting and revving it the way I do to try to get it right.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Well that's slightly embarrassing! I put my old known "good" carb on and it still ran like crap. I had some leaky secondaries the other day on a different carb so I thought maybe I fouled some plugs. Pulled the plugs and found this on #4. Right before I pulled this known good carb off I did a compression test on it just to verify I had a healthy engine. Apparently when I did the last one (#4) the adapter on the compression gauge came off of the gauge and stayed in the engine. It appears I simply threaded the plug into it. I thought it looked like it was sticking out kind of far!

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
FYI it runs better WITHOUT that in there! So now I have to go back and put the carb/carbs back on since it was probably that causing my problems all along. Dummy!
