Re: 1600 turbo build thread
So since I had a few minutes of downtime I figured I'd address a few other items I've been wanting to get to. Ordered some H4 headlights with the p&c from CIP1. In the pic the new light is on the right side.

Your bearings are bin fodder, down to the copper backing, check the rod journals really well, may need to be ground

Yeah I'm taking it to work today for a measuring. I wasn't sure if they told any stories about what has been happening inside the engine?

That's ok as long as the crank is good!

I think I would have the crank looked at to see if it needs to be polished. I thought I saw something but not sure.

Yeah my guy is going to look it over today. I need to get my bearings ordered so i can get the piston and barrels on to check deck height. Still have to get heads ordered if I'm going to.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Cant you only order the right size bearings if you get the measurements from both case and crank? If your crank needs to be reground you will have to do that first and order bearings after
Better to be blown than to suck!

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Yeah the case checked out ok. That's why I need to get the crank measured. Which I'm getting done today. Then I can order the bearings. If it checks out that is.

Yikes! I was going to pull the gears off of the crank for its check up but when I put the spreader on it, it seemed like it was just going to jack up the spacer behind it. Any ideas how to deal with this without hurting anything? Trying to be real careful, I can see myself damaging that brass gear real easy!

There is a tool for that. Does a good job.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Aw man I hate to buy a tool to use once. Especially one I have to wait a week to get.
Think it would be foolish to just heat the gears, and use a spreader and a 3 jaw puller to get it off?

Buguy,
I've had the same situation on tools I think i will only use once, one was a strut spring compressor and actually used it four times in 10 years. The other one was the crank gear puller which used a few times since I repaired a motor for a friend of mine and saved me some time.
I now have a few specialty tools "just in case" which people in the VW world around my don't have, so I guess it's money well spent.

Yeah I suppose I will have this car the rest of my life (my grandma bought it new) so I guess there is a pretty good chance I will be back in there.
