1600 turbo build thread

Well I have pro welders at work,. But I'd be more worried about getting it apart and back together again correctly.
I suppose I really should just get ready to buy a pro built trans.

Damn it. I am about to place an order at CB and saw the hideaway exhaust went up $40. I was on the fence about building my own, but now it's looking even more likely.

I'd recommend it. I asked a local builder what they use, they sheepishly told me Empi. Told me they are the best that they've found. Good price too. I bought one, I've used it for 6 years now, flywheel off and on multiple times over the years. 450ft/lbs every time. I'd buy another.

So I have:
Stage 1 pressure plate
Cb superdisk
Standard flywheel
Racing gland nut
Pack of fly wheel shims
Damn. Over $330 to my door

I got a little bored too and decided to pull my turbo apart and see what it was made out of! Really I just wanted to see where it could pulling oil from to make it smoke like it does. Not much to it. The exhaust side was a little sooty but nothing looked odd.

I can't even imagine! I almost needed 3 hands to get those big ass snap rings out. They are for real and feel like if it got away from you it would take your scalp off! Other than that it was pretty easy to get apart.
I put it in the engine block steamer we have at work today and cooked it for 5 hours and then painted it. Probably assemble it tomorrow.

I bet if u mount your turbo up high like mine it wouldn't smoke I think it's a draining problem???

It is mounted up high.

I do have a slight problem with drainage. My oil outlet is kind of long and goes right down to my distributor. I have a sump on the way and will drain into that once I have it on. It will be more of a straight shot. I'm draining into 1/2 valve cover so it crosses over to that side and goes a bit flat there. Should drain just fine though.
Also I tried draining into a cup right out of the turbo and it still smoked. I'm not sure why.

Why not drain into 3/4 cover?

I should but I figured I need a sump anyway. I think when I built it I just grabbed a valve cover and put the drain in not really thinking much about it. I used to run a 3/8" hose and routing was way easier/better. Now that its 5/8" its much more difficult.
