Yikes. Total seal are about the same as a set of p/c

I've never used them, for that reason. I've used Grant for years, but apparently they are cheap and not great for what we are trying to do, or at least what I'm trying to do. I'm putting Deves in my big motor this year. I'll use what JE sent me for the mouse.

Yeah. I'm going to try to figure out what's going on with this engine before I get too carried away. Something is fishy.

This may be a stupid question but how much oil are you adding to the engine and did the compression go up when you added oil to the cylinders to test the compression?

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
I didn't add oil to the cylinders to test compression. And oil level is just below full. I had run the engine and then after it sat about 1.5 hours I did the compression test.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Here is what I know right now:
I have a bit of an oil leak. Can't tell where its from.
AFR reads rich when it "shouldn't" be. But I don't know 100% on that.
Seems to have blowby. Not 100% here either because I never paid attention to how much air comes out when I take the oil fill cap off. Definitely has some smoke or something like that coming out the breather. Never used to do that.
Some squeaking noise from the engine
Compression is 130+ on all cylinders.
Plugs were the worst I have ever seen. But the car has only been driven 7 miles since I picked it up. Lots lots of idle/rev time though. Lots! I just got the plate for it last week so I wasn't able to drive it.
Turbo smokes and has since I put this one on.
So the blowby or smoke wasn't like that before and the squeaking is new.

Bad blowby will pour out as opposed to floating out. Even a perfect engine will float out some blowby when it is warming up.Those pictures of your plugs look like you are running rich AND blowing oil. Usually the plugs will have more of a carbon build up with oil mixed in. They will be crusty and oily. The rich condition acts like a cleaner.

I little air is ok. Lots of air and any white smoke is blow by.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
I took the fitting off the end of my compression tester and screwed an air chuck fitting into it. I'm going to try running each cylinder to top dead center and put 30 psi of air into them and try to hear what it does. With the way it smokes out the exhaust and has such good compression I still wonder if it has something to do with the turbo. But the squeaking I hear in the engine points more to a p/c problem. I will report back what I learn.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Ok here is what I found. This was on a cold engine (but it is 80 degrees out)
#1- no air through the crank case but some getting past both valves
#2- very very tiny bit through the crank case but none past valves
#3- no air through crank case but some past both valves
#4- very very tiny bit through crank case but none past valves
On 2 and 4 I had to plug my breather with my finger and release it to tell that a little was getting into the crank case. Nothing I would think would cause a problem.
I noticed it last time I had the plugs out and this time. The #3 plug had oil on top of it. So my leak must be coming from above it. Oil cooler maybe?

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Some more interesting findings. First I still don't know if I'm getting excess air through the crankcase. I will link a video so you can kind of see.
Also I added some oil to the engine so it was just above full and ran my turbo oil drain to a quart cup and ran the engine 'til the cup was about 1/2 to 3/4 full. Did that 6-7 times. Seems that my turbo smokes way way less (not none but close) this way. Also I didn't notice any smoke coming out the engine breather that way. The oil smells gassy and it kind of thin. I'm wondering if the smoke I had been seeing is fuel in the oil burning off?
So anyway, either way it seems I have a turbo drain issue.
Does this seem like too much air coming from the fill tube or is this normal?

Blowby looks likes a thick fog. You don't have a thick oil vapor being pumped out of your oil fill so you don't have a blowby issue.

If it smells gassy, just renew the oil and see if it comes back?
Better to be blown than to suck!

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
I picked up some Valvoline VR1 oil and will change it soon. Also grabbed some stuff to move my drain to the other valve cover. Should be a much straighter shot to the 3/4 valve cover than it is to the 1/2 side. I will use the old one as a breather.

Re: 1600 turbo build thread
Usually problematic blowby is caused by the rings and filth's the oil up quick. I have read that bad valve guides and seals will introduce which would actually be exhaust gas; I would guess, to the crank case.
