Land speed 1516cc turbo
I'm just starting my winter project. 66x85.5 Turbocharged for land speed racing at the Bonneville salt flats. I'm hoping for around 20 lbs boost, 7000 rpm, and enough HP to go 150+ MPH. I don't know if I'm going to try a DHLA 40 or a 2 barrel holley blow through.

Re: Land speed 1516cc turbo
Here are a couple updates. It took a while to collect the parts to build the 1516cc motor.
Piston to cylinder wall clearance is good at .006, and I just need to open the ring gap a little from .020 to about .024.
I decided to try the Los Panchitos heads and they needed a bunch of work to get them to clear the pushrods and get valve covers to fit on them. Once all of that was finished I was able to get the engine in the car and fired up.

Hi. Just wondering what sort of gear ratio you use to achieve a record breaking top end. 4 speed or 5 speed.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Re: Land speed 1516cc turbo
We took the new engine to Speedweek and ran into super thin air. I started with 200 main jets and it would just nose over at 4000 rpm. It finally started to build some boost at 5,000 in 3rd and held 5 psi through 4th. I switched to 180 mains and it did better, but only 7 lbs boost. The turbo just wouldn’t build enough boost to get some power out of the 1516cc. I topped out at 105 mph. I was still able to set a record in H/CBGC at 94.33 mph, but this should have a lot more in it.
I switched out the turbo for one that I had that is a little smaller. Hopefully this will build some boost.
Just an oil line to hook up and a new top for the fuel pressure regulator and we are ready to go for World of Speed.

What size turbo was that bigger? Also, could you have run a little more timing to try and build some heat?

Re: Land speed 1516cc turbo
The gearing is stock with a 3.88 ring and pinion. I ran 28” tires with my 1915 turbo last year and we did 162 mph. I’m running 25” tires this year. 3.80, 2.06, 1.26, .89GARRICK.CLARK wrote: ↑Thu Aug 30, 2018 9:27 am Hi. The old turbo is a t3/4 billet 60-1 with Precision 62 turbine and .64 housing. it was great on the 1915cc. I’m trying a t3/4 with a stg3 exhaust and .48 housing and a to4b V trim and a .60 compressor housing next.

W.W. bad ass
sux the things acting up can u run a 4 barrel in your class? have u ever tried a .82 4th gear?

Re: Land speed 1516cc turbo
On my header the 4 x 42mm pipes merge into 1 round 3 bolt triangle flange with a round exit hole, I then made an ally plate adaptor about 30mm thick. I copied the round exit hole on the merged header, and then the entry hole on the turbo. The smaller oblong hole on the turbo resulted in the ally plate adaptor having a tapered cone shape hole, so the 4 exhaust pipes blasting into a cone shaped adaptor helped to speed up the turbo.
I think that makes sense.
lol.
Wonder if your motor will work with a 3.44 .

Re: Land speed 1516cc turbo
I ran a 4 barrel with the 1915cc. I was having trouble with overly rich conditions off boost with that too and i was thinking that the 1500 wouldnt have enough velocity to work well with the 4 barrel. I definitely don’t need any taller gearing. The .82 creates a huge gap between 3rd and 4th and the 3:44 might work if I could lower both 3rd and 4th and get them closer together. With the 3:88 and .89 it can go to 181 mph.

Have you got a welded cooling fan in the housing. 7K REVS might be an issue at speed.

Re: Land speed 1516cc turbo
Yes, I have a welded fan. I’ll be done with oil lines on the new turbo and the parts showed up for the fuel pressure regulator so hopefully I’ll be doing some testing by the end of this week.

When are you planning to head out to WoS? Whole event? Or just a few days? Looks like I'm not working during the even, might try to sneak out there for some of it.
