Turbo size?

Post by craigvwdude »

Fellas,
gathering parts for a turbo 1914 build. This is going to be a sweep the floor kind of a build. LOW budget build! LOL
Anyways, I need your input on which turbo I will need. This will be a drag only build. So I plan on using a Ebay turbo. Yes i know, not the best choice, but like i said, this is a drag only, low budget build. If i get a couple of seasons out of it, great.
Specs will be:
1914cc
40x35.5 ported, welded heads
CB turbo cam
draw thru turbo
Holley carb
CB Black Box
water/meth injection

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Madmike!
I posted over there also. LOL
I actually figured a T3/T4 would be a little big on a small motor. But that's why I asked!
I've assembled 2 turbo kits now with good success, but I've never picked the turbo size. That is still a mistery to me! lol

I have heard that the ebay turbos (Chinese) do not have a carbon seal.
Something to think about unless you want to name your drag car "mosquito patrol"

I think you really need more information to pick the "right" turbo. Compression ratio. Hp target. Rpm's. How much boost you want to run. Fuel. Etc..

Buguy,
Compression can be whatever. (engine hasn't been built yet). Hp, 150-175hp. Rpms, 6500 max. Fuel, prob race gas.

If you are draw through I don't know much about it .

If you want blow through.......then a MHI TD04L-13T would be perfect for you and get you to 250 plus hp.

Try for an intercooler or at least WI.

I just talked to a buddy of mine, and he has a T4 with a 67mm wheel on the cold side. Don't know on the exhaust side.
It does say a/r .60 on the cold side. It's a Garrett with a carbon seal.
Wonder if this would work?

Really need to know what the hot side is. If it's a 43 you might be able to.

And come on man! Your going to build a drag car with 150-175hp??!! You could make that with a 1915 NA! If it's really drag only, throw some race gas, WI, and some real boost to it. Maybe even some nitrous to spool a bigger turbo. The TD04L or maybe something a little bigger like a HX 30 or 35 should move 35-40 pounds of air. Should be no real reason you can't make 300hp.

Well, i'm thinking 150-175 sould be pretty easy with a turbo. I always aim low. If it ends up with more power, I consider that a bonus! lol
A buddy of mine had a 140hp 1915 and had to rev the crap out of it. I don't want to have to rev it that hard.

140 hp NA is pretty good for a 1915. So it will be gravy for a turbo car. Especially drag only. You don't have to worry much about keeping it cool on long drives and you don't have to compromise WOT for cruise. But I'm afraid 69 on the hot side might be too much.
