When two surfaces come into close proximity to each other as the piston reaches top dead center, there is a volume of fuel and air displaced out of that area at very high velocity. It is extremely turbulent and bounces around while the combustion process is taking place. Detonation seems to happen in areas at the farthest points from ignition (spark plug) because they are stagnant. Manufacturers don't like to build gasoline engines with piston much wider than 4.5 or 5 inches because of this. The tight deck creates turbulence that keeps these outer areas from being stagnant and spreads the flame front throughout the combustion chamber very rapidly before the high pressures of combustion can cause detonation.

I can't help you much, but in my I opinion the versatility the squishy piston provides seems like a bargain to me. A set of Wiseco forged pistons are $400 and the squishys are $650. In the grand scheme of an engine build that difference is a drop in the bucket.

Be careful with those ones! C height will need some serious stroke and rod length to have an even sort of normal engine width.
