Ignition coil upgrade

Post by advinnie »

Hi all at the moment I’m running a stock ignition coil on my 1600 turbo bug and was wondering if it’s worth upgrading the coil or not?

Yes. More charge makes it harder for the plug to light up. Fatter spark give you a quicker burn too. It will wear out your points faster though.

Man I wish I still had the link or could remember some of it. I found a thread where a dude tested them and I was surprised at what he found. Seemed like the Bosch blue wasn't so great. I remember something about the flamethrower coil being pretty good but there were 2 and you had to get the one with the correct ohms. Seems like it was 6 ohms but I just don't remember now. You might try a search on the Samba for "best coil" or something like that.

^flamethrower is pretty good. You're average speedshop will see a V8 style coil that will be pretty good too. Honestly, an upgrade to megajolt or similar is a good thing. I wouldn't touch the CB black box. Seems like everyone has issues with it.
