Finally starting on a blow through Kadron motor

Post by Lo Cash John »

Well, this has been a goofy little something I've wanted to plat with for a long while.

Everybody has owned or helped a friend work on a motor with Kads. Well, this is a bit different and a path that only a few have gone before.
I have a buddy that wanted a turbo motor but didn't want to deal with the delayed throttle response and the behavior of a draw through system. Spending the $$$ on EFI is not an option (maybe on a future build)

Goals:
Low buck
Fairly reliable (or about as reliable as a 1600 running Kads)
Good throttle response and driveability
Make 120-130hp
Keep stock displacement
Look "professional" (don't laugh!!)

Here's the idea so far:
1600 with Demello counter-weighted German crank
12lb German flywheel, 8 dowell of course
Heavy duty gland nut
Engle 100 cam
Pushrods will either be heavy duty aluminum or chromoly CB's (I have the CB's sitting here)
Rockers will be stock style, either 1.1 or 1.25 (I have both) on solid shafts
85.5 cylinders (unknown brand but probably QSC junk)
85.5 CAST VW dished pistons (F' it!! Why not...)
Heads are up in the air. My buddy MIGHT splurge on some Panchito 044 heads.
Distributor we will play with:
I have a CB MagnaSpark Digital that we'll run at first
I also have a "Dual Vacuum" VW distributor that we'll try (will retard on boost)
I have a large diameter 40hp dizzy that we may lock-out and run with a CB Black Box
Turbo is a KKK K03 from a 1.8T VW motor
Figuring on making 8-10 PSI
Will probably add water/meth or inter-cooler at a later time.

Feel free to chime in, offer advice or make fun of us. Your choice...

First thing is to make pressure hats for the carbs and get rid of that stupid air cleaner stud/bridge piece on the carbs:
3" exhaust pipe works perfect for pressure hat.

A split open length of vacuum hose might work for a seal. If not, we have other ideas

More progress and with the EMPI header bolted on

The header got a ton of re-work. The crappy thin exhaust port flanges were all replaced with 3/8" THICK flanges from Tiger @ A-1 Muffler. We also used these same flanges for the J-pipe joint. Then we de-burred and removed booger welds inside the collector and made 3/8" thick flanges for it also.

Here's the piping getting fabbed up. At this point we had not welded the flanges onto the header collector and up pipe. We figured we'd build all of that, then install that flange where it worked out best.

Here you can see the beginnings of the exhaust dump pipe. We went with 3" because, well WHY NOT??

Actually no, this is not 1 day. I WISH!!

This actually started last summer with most major fabrication done then. We also began gathering engine parts as well.
Then like so many projects, this went on the back burner until just a couple of weeks ago.
I'll post more later.

What's it going in????

Ha Cool build! How do you prep the kadron's for a turbo?

It will be going in a late model bug.

As for preping the Kads for turbo use, that will consist of rebushed throttle shafts and experimenting with the jets. Since we are staying at or below 10psi, I hope we don't need much more than that.

Pretty stealthy. It all fits under a decklid with stand offs.

Here's a few more pics of the engine compartment:

Has anyone here reported problems associated with having the turbo in the engine bay? I'm sure having the decklid standoffs will help greatly...but man, I would have to think it's gonna get toasty in there. Gonna be sucking in some pretty hot air if that's where the intake filter stays.
