86mm Scat crank from around 2005, glad nut to secure Scat flywheel made for crank, flywheel and crank are wedgemated

thanks

I would measure the diameter of the crank but, if it is t-4 sized as I would expect that would be best to use shims that fit tight and don't cut grooves.

But I have never used a wedgemated crank ever, I am under the assumption they come with the shims as that kind of setup shouldn't be taken apart any more than necessary as that ruins the wedge.

the parts were bought new from a fallen VW guru's widow....no shims were with the lot of new parts. A call to Scat today, they state to use stock type 1 shims. Type 1 shims dont cover the whole end of the thrust portion of brg. This is why I thought Id run this past you knowledgeable folks

thanks

Hmmm. If the nose of the crank is small enough to accept the I.D. of the Type I shims, I guess that's what you'll need to use - it may not have sufficient O.D. to cover the entire surface of the Type IV thrust bearing, but if it matches the flywheel's O.D. there'd be no advantage to making it bigger.

Note that Type I shims come in two I.D. sizes. Thru mid`66 they were 1mm bigger, you don't want to use those on a crank that's got the longer "O-ring-style" snout since they'll hula-hoop around it and slice a groove into the crank - I've seen 'em cut all the way through until they contacted the harder dowel pins.

I suppose you could have some custom shims waterjet or laser cut once you figure out what thicknesses are needed.
