I didn't say I had ethanol problems in the 50's even though it was being use as racing fuel but as the problem with ethanol in gas came up the different fixes for the valve and seat problems also came up. When I was building a couple of engines in the 90s this was the solution advised. Since then things have changed a lot. I will stand corrected on the need for hard seats; it was the fix then and I have heard it is still being used; right or wrong. I have also bought cars with the valve seats hammered out of the head or the block (Flathead Fords for example) and jamming the valves open.

Some things I looked up to check myself out (something I usually do it if I am challenged)

Not sure where this article above exactly intersects....but its strictly about Titanium valves....which are not HARD...they a very tough and high temperature and as they note...Titanium does not conduct heat as well. The problem listed is that hardened nickel valve seats are too hard for Titanium and teh titanium not pulling heat away as well...causes the seats to overheat, the head to swell...and it pounds out the seat ledge. The main copy of this article is older than the 2007 date...its a reprint. I read it years before that somewhere else. Beryllium copper has been the "go-to"
seat for Nascar and grandnational and sprint cars for some time...at least the late 90'

Where are we looking in this forum?

A warning on hard seats on newer thin wall heads.

This one...is again...mainly just another punch card for beryllium copper....where they make sense. Anything short of circle track...I do not see an issue with nickel or nickel cobalt. Again...its mainly for titanium valves. It does not mention hardness unless I am missing something.

Interesting.

Dead link

Very interesting
Not saying your assertions are...wrong...just saying that the seat materials have not been an issue from everything I have seen. Ray
