Oil plug WBX / OXY case
Is this a restrictor as on the type 1 cases? the #4? rear mainbearing at the pulley end
I'm drilling and tapping a case now and was told this could be a restrictor.
i have done another WBX engine before i knew this, just drilled and tapped it same with the other ones.
i have not noticed any problems so far though.

Re: Oil plug WBX / OXY case
Fasty, yes, it restricts, but i clearance the new plugs to not restrict the up port to the no4 bearing, as i saw signs years ago that it may be short of oil, also the thrust cam bearing I've seen down to the copper in the early days, i put radial groves on the thrust face to pick up oil now. i reasoned my 32mm pump gears would compensate for removing the restriction, like you, I've not had problems since removing it. be careful removing it, i 'lost' one down the case bore one time while drilling it, so go slow and use a new drill to avoid putting pressure on it, i got it back out, but best you know.

On the same note, will a wbx case need the same plugs as a T1 case?

Was about to ask the same question. Grelland good choice for an engine. I hope you won't convert it to air as these WBX engines are great.

Re: Oil plug WBX / OXY case
they are not the same as T1, but i have used a T1 set of plugs if that makes sense, there are less of them to do, as you can get to the back of the filter housing for cleaning, i just drilled larger on 2 or 3 of the very small wbx ones.

thanks, that makes perfect sense

Re: Oil plug WBX / OXY case
i tried to pull the restrictor out in a whole piece, ut that was difficult.
got some part out of to actually see the restrictor part, as the diameter at the inner part is smaller
a quick calculation shows that it equals a ~1.7mm hole.
so i drilled and tapped the galley for the nr4 bearing to accept a 1/8 npt. which i drilled a 2mm hole in.
also tested with pressurised air on a stock case and u can clearly feel the restriction.

Hows it going Fastback? I would think its put in there to maintain good oil pressure to the hydro's, and the bigger mains, the no 4 main being relatively lightly loaded, having said that, T1 uses the same restrictor. unless they were thinking ahead to hydros

hi BaBb.
yeah as u say the nr4 bearing only takes up the forces from the alternator and waterpump on the WBX
on a oxy it has to deal with the fan , but the forces are relative low i think.
maybe it was there also to prevent leak from the seal ??

Re: Oil plug WBX / OXY case
I drill them out to ~3mm, run a coarse drywall screw in, and yank out with a slide hammer.
(You usually get several uses out of the screw, I just run it into the thin ones and yank)
Have not had one restrictor refuse to cooperate, the thin cap ones sometimes rip out and get a larger lag screw.
The #4 bearing itself has a restricted oil feed hole, and I always see garbage built up at the restriction plug.
I see no upside to keeping it, the bearing clearance should be the restriction.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: Oil plug WBX / OXY case
all the other plugs come out easily , but this one is different
it's massive and maybe around 20mm long.

I know. drill through the center to reduce its grab, run a nice screw down the middle
(tap it out and use a machine screw, run it all the way though if you like)
It will come out, hell, if you put a washer and big nut under the through bolt you can use the screw as a puller if you don't have a slide hammer.
