Looking for some info on how to convert a stock 2.1 WBX in my '86 Vanagon from Digifant to dual carbs.
What intakes work on a WBX & is it possible to install a mechanical fuel pump?
Thanks

Why go through all the pain of carbs when you can fit a fresh MegaSquirt 2 or 3 and gain control, economy and power for less? Look to diyautotune.com and msextra.com for everything you need. Since you already have a Digifant you can reuse all sensors directly, just splice the harnesses together and start tuning.

Well, I guess I could do that, & swap the AFM with a MAF using a piggy back controller - like a Unichip or something...
But I don't want to do that right now on this engine
I'm wondering if Type 1 intakes will fit....

Re: '86 Wasserboxer - want to convert from FI to carbs
Tha above post has a good point as it's not a cheap job swapping to carbs, tho it is easy enough if you can get a hold of the parts... after unplugging and removing all the FI system, remove the pump blanking cover, you can then fit a fuel pump pedestal and pump with the pushrod, you can use bug parts for this as the parts are identical to the carbed type Wasser pump, you will need a Bug carb kit with short inlet manifolds to allow the engine cover to fit over the air filters, then they need port matching to the Wasser intake ports, unless you can run to the proper CSP German Wasser intake manifolds with the square ports ready to go, not sure if they are short enough tho, enquire, weber 40s work ok with 34 or 36mm chokes with a centre pull throttle linkage, the throttle cable will need adapting to suit. Odd jobs include adapting the engine breather hose to the air filter, drilling and adapting fittings to the intake runners for the brake servo pipe connection, then a suitable distributor vacuum take off from the intake, tho the webers should provide for it, or skip that operation if a good centrifugal 009 can be sourced, best if you can find a German one and avoid the Chinese rip off version.
you may also have problems with idle stabilising and engine stalling when all the air con equipment kicks in and drags the idle speed down, a plus for FI...

Re: '86 Wasserboxer - want to convert from FI to carbs
Thanks. The A/C will be removed. As for the distributor, I already have an 034 SVDA points type from an older project.
I pulled the fuel pump blanking cover last night. So a bug type 1 (bug) pump/drive will drop right in? If so, what is a good performance type mech pump that will feed dual carbs? I'm going to start looking for used (short) intakes that will fit the Weber 40s.

The stock pump output is more than enough, no need for anything else, the stock pumps can support 150hp, only the quality of new ones is a problem, Brosol seem to be acceptable, just, there are some Chinese, eurosomething brand we get here in UK, (MAY NOT BE UK, Scotland voting right now lol! ) That are total crap, avoid,, of course I forgot to mention you will need a pressure regulator for the webers, set at 2to3 psi max fuel pressure on them..

Good to know on the regulator. I have an extra one left over from my last project
I have a credit I need to use from The Bus Depot. I wonder how their pumps are...
Does it matter if the pump is the generator or alternator style?
Cheers

You can use either pump but be aware the corresponding shorter pushrod belongs with the alternator pump, it offers more overhead clearance then the taller dynamo pump, the plastic pedestal is common to either pump type, I would use the alternator pump as it's used on the carb equipped Wassers, fuel supply is in at the top port, out at the lower one.

You can use a wasser 1.9 pump and rod setup to be sure.
The stock electronic ignition distributor works fine with carbs so no need to change it out.
Plug the idle stabilisor cables together.
The CSP manifolds will allow the stock engine lid provided the carbs have short air filter tops.
A T1 hex bar that mounts to the carb tops does work despite being at full width adjustment.
My Bug conversion runs duel twin 40's on csp manifolds and an electric fuel pump.
