Fuel system recommendations in prep for TYPE 4?

Post by Southernbug »

Greetings,

I'm currently building a 74 standard beetle for autocross, SCCa, Hill Climbs etc. I am deep into the chassis restoration and have some fuel system questions. My intent is to eventaully install a Type 4 powerplant in the 2.0L+ / 140-160HP range. What fuel system is recommended in preparation for this type of engine. My questions specifically are:

Fuel Pump Type: Mechanical or electric? Best location?
Regulator: Type and recommended location?
Fuel Line: What size main line is recommended AN -6, -8 ?
Return line: Is a return line necessary?
Safety Switches: For an electric pump what are the recommended ciircuit safety switches to ensure the pump shuts off due to low oil pressure, crash, etc?

Thanks!

Big question:
Carbs or EFI?

Hi Jake,

I don't have a lot of experience with EFI so I tend to fall back to carb's because its my comfort zone. EFI is vastly superior in my humble opinion so its probably best to plan towards EFI since I'm building from the ground up.

Shane,
the only issues with that are the vast differences in set up that each demand.

doing a carbbed set up correctly and doing the same for EFI is drastically different.
